M, 64, in decent shape. Got the J&J one-shot March 2021; J&J booster November 2021; Pfizer booster June 2022.
Herewith my testimony from the Time of the Plague:
Sun 12/11: run 9 miles over hills, seven minutes faster than I did the same workout 11 months ago. Zero sign of illness. Have big Martini before dinner. Yummy!
Mon 12/12: wake 2:30 AM w/dry mouth. Weird. Get up at usual 6:30, slightly off. Mild sniffles, no other symptoms. Tell wife, stay home rather than going to office. Fever begins by 8:30: 99.2. Fever slowly rises all day to a high of 101.2 at 3:30 PM, then slowly declines. Take no medicine of any sort. Don't eat much. Lie on and in bed, somewhat in a stupor. Eat little for dinner, except some apple sauce, which I can taste just fine. Nothing else appeals to me. Assum I have a mild flu. Am wiped out. Just lay in bed. Son, 16, glancing through door, seems worried. Wife starts masking. "You've got the flu," she says.
Tues 12/13: Lose 2 1/2 pounds overnight! No booze, almost no dinner, three or four late night bathroom visits, has miraculous effect. Only a runner would be happy about such precipitous weight loss. But have fever of 100 on waking. Wife says, "You don't have COVID. You've got the flu. But we've got some home test kits. No need to go to Urgent Care. Just do a home test." Do a home test. By god, the stripes both start coming in. "Honey! Guess whaa-aat? I've got COVID." She masks with a vengeance. Symptoms remain a fever and sniffles, plus an occasional dry cough. Taste my food just fine. Feel pretty good, actually. Energy is back! I take two Tylenol mid-morning; that helps keep the fever in check. Late afternoon, when the Tylenol wears off, I suddenly break into nearly uncontrollable chills, shakes, etc. Quite remarkable. Pull on multiple layers, huddle under a blanket. Appetite is good, though. Take a Tylenol PM + regular Ty at bedtime.
Wed 12/14: Wake in the middle of the night, fever bone, bathed in sweat. Not pleasant. But no fever is a good thing. Take two regular Tylenol after breakfast. Good work day. Today, unlike yesterday, there's no shivering spell late afternoon, just a very low residual fever of 99.3. Appetite fine. An occasional cough. Have a bit of bourbon before dinner. Sleep well. "I'll be running in two days," I tell my wife.
Thurs 12/15: Sleep just fine. No Tylenol needed. The cough is going away. Head is slightly heavy but fever is gone, never to return. My energy is high.
Friday 12/16: I'm fine. Masking when family's around, but otherwise just fine. 3 mile jog late afternoon. HR/pace ratio is solid. Zero pressure in chest, zero discernable aftereffects from COVID. Have a big Martini before dinner. Sleep well.
Saturday 12/17: Day 5 (with Day 0 being Monday): I'm well. No sniffles, no discernable cough. I have vanquished the beast. 3 mile jog, slow. Planning to run the same hilly 9-miler tomorrow morning. It'll be 26 degrees in N. Mississippi.
