Actually the last 0.1 mile. He lost 15 seconds to Mathison, Breker and Hansen over that last tenth of a mile. Hunter Jones actually hung on fairly well at the end, though, finishing as fast as Mathison (he must've taken a couple relatively easy minutes on the flat to recover from that start).
It seems like that last .107 split is a little off. Hard to believe the top finishers were only running ~5:30 pace in the finishing stretch. Similarly oddly lengthy splits on the girls’ side.
The timing company added about 30 meters extra to the last .1 miles.
The timer for the 3 mile mark was moved across the street and a ways down the path to get it out of the way. They've done something similar to that in past years too.
Which means that the 1.0 to 1.5 split and the 2.5 to 3.0 mile split is short.
Anyone know what happened to Bob Kennedy's daughter Sophia? She was 5th at 1 mile, 6th at 2 miles and ended upa DNF. Did she just go for broke? If so, I kind of love it.
On the girls side I feel like its Shea's to lose. I dont see anyone in the lineup that could match her best effort with Riggs not running and Engelhardt still recovering. But we know how Shea goes. Her ceiling is a new course record. Her floor is a DNF. Hoping for the former.
I agree on your assessment. She should run this smart and not push too early let somebody like Baloga set the pace. She does try to go too hard from the gun some times.
I was wondering why you are only, or almost only, talking about women races ? Are you a girl ? Is it because you want to see who is the « next Katelyn » ? No hate, just curious.
No hate for him, I admire his courage, but I think he’s one of the most overrated runners in recent HS history.
Yeah of course he’s insanely good, but remember, not so long ago, he was ranked first in the country. A lot of people thought he was in a class of his own and was going to destroy all the NP kids. Some people were even saying he could break GF’s record at the california state meet course, when in reality, he would probably struggle a lot to break 14:50 (Aaron’s PB is only 14:41 after multiple tentatives).
Again, no hate towards him, he’s really good and improved a lot since last season. I just don’t think he is what we thought he was.

I think Hunter is overraced. He crushed every post season race instead of just running to qualify. If you're going to run both NXN and Champs you NEED to take it easy at the qualifiers. These days nobody is good enough to run all out for like 4 weeks in a row and still compete at an exceptional level against the nation's best. He's better than the last two weeks have shown for sure, but he looks like a guy trying to will himself to having the legs he had in October.
