Newbury is very lucky they got the transfer kid from Florida. They would be vulnerable without him (they would only have 5 guys and be scoring a 16:15 guy at a national meet. An off day or injury from one of the top 4 would be devastating).
But I think if we examine a lot of rosters we'll see things fall into place for all sorts of reasons. The luck was that Seymour's mom apparently got a good job offer in So. Calif. I have to believe that they could have chosen other schools in the area, but given NP's success it made sense for Brayden to enroll at NP.
Some Granada guys had a bad day. Seems a lot of kids got pulled out too fast by the NP boys, the smart racers did well. Great Oak really wiped out going from #2 at mile mark to #4, San Clemente did the opposite going #4 to #2
German’s record is insane. L&L most likely get it by the end of the season, but the caliber of runners that have attacked it and failed the last few years is incredible. And they are doing it together, which definitely helps
I’m stunned that an experience coach like Buchanan would only line up 5 runners in a big cross country race. Especially when you he knows his 4:47 1600 girl is in consistent in cross country, 27:01 at Woodward at last years state finals. Buchanan must have some girls that can fill that 6 and 7 spots. Give runners a chance and they may surprise you.
looking at final times I still believe Los Altos beats a full strength Buchanan.
Inconsistent? That 27 was because she (Hutchison) got hurt but insisted on finishing. Otherwise every time she ran last year was under 18. So "inconsistent" is a little unfair. She should have dropped out of that race which is what happened here. You can see her limping at the 2.1 mark. But at that point Buchanan was still leading so not sure why you think they would have lost.
This shows just how great German Fernandez was when healthy and prior to the veganism. However, Leo Young did get the Clovis Invite record, breaking Nico's 14:28. He might well go sub-14:20 at states. This Newbury Park team looks vulnerable right now, given the bigger than expected gap to the 4-5 men. Aaron Sahlman may have run a high 1:48, but that doesn't make him an 800m man. He has run low 4 and 8:03, plus 14:15ish at Running Lane. His best event in the future will likely be mile-3k.
Great oak boys graduated their 2-3-4 guys, and R Cortes in not where he was last year. That’s pretty much the same as losing your top 4.
Result: they lost to 3 California teams. RIP Great Oak
Great Oak is not the power of the past, but make no mistake about it: they are still one of the best teams in the state, and that is saying a lot. The strongest team from my old league, for instance, is getting its best results since the 1970s, yet it is far down the list below Great Oak still.

This year she was Buchanan’s #6 at Woodbridge, their #2 at Rudolph (2-4) didn’t run and now she dnf’s Clovis.
In the interview after Rudolph she stated she needed that performance. It wasn’t clear if it was because of her performance at Woodbridge or if she was coming back from some sort of injury, I listen to it twice. So based on results this year I stand by what I wrote.
I do hope she runs to her full potential because she has the talent to be Buchanan’s number one.

Correct. Great Oak is not a terrible team. They would win or at least qualify from regions like Heartland or New York. But CA is strong but not as strong/deep as northwest so I don’t think there will be 2 at-larges from ca this year.

Correct Los Altos cannot beat a full strength, healthy Buchanan, but that group of Buchanan five was not going to beat Los Altos today they’re technically they were ahead at 2.1. Los Altos beat their four person score so that fifth girl would’ve had to run negative points.
NP return 5 of the top 7 of the best team of all time get a new recruit and they still might not repeat as national champions. I think it becomes more apparent with every race that Sahlman is a 800/miler and not a 5K guy. The new guy and Doshi are a minute back of the Youngs.
14:52 Woodward by a an 800 type runner is such a horrible time. But then again if trains like an 800 runner 2 to 3 miles a day, then 14:52 is a darn good time, especially if that 800 type is just coming back from injury.
NBP can sure use Martinez.
At this point I don’t think there’s enough time for Martinez to get in Doshi/Seymour’s shape. Martinez would probably be in the same shape as “cantu at Woodbridge” at the most. Or worst case scenario, he might not be on the NP-varsity shape.
I think I saw an insta post that he might still do track this year. And in one of the mile split articles it said that he may return for xc. We will see. Hopefully he does track. More bonus if he runs in college and doesn’t quit early like Simone
I just hope that Cantu runs better than he did at Woodbridge. That way they would have a good 6th man. If their 7th can’t keep up with him, he can’t. And that’s fine as long as he gives it his all at nxn
Jesuit was missing senior Jake Swanson. I noticed that in the 2019 state meet, he was only 17 seconds off of Leo Young’s time. Now he’s not even #1 on the Jesuit team. Crazy how things change huh
The school that got 9th (Redwood) is the school that Liam Anderson went to. Nxn champ but still not even scoring for Stanford now
Lex/Leo with SR above 200. Aaron S with a 194. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets to 200 by nxn
Doshi and Seymour didn’t quite cross the 180 border.
Cantu would struggle to make varsity for some schools if he doesn’t run like he did at Woodbridge. He needs to put up a good performance at NXN and race as if he’s scoring. Who knows what would happen to any of their scorers?
Still hoping Martinez returns back in shape. Might not be better than Doshi anymore but still. Would be nice to have a 6/7, what if 2 of their scorers falter or drop out
Ventura raced 5 girls.
AND ALSO 6 GUYS JUST LIKE AT WOODBRIDGE!!!!
Why the Ventura coaching staff is making these decisions is beyond me.
You guys have 10ish guys fighting for the varsity spots. Why don’t you just put the top Jv guys in if there’s room for them. This just baffles me.
If Sahlman is really coming back from injury, I take back my earlier description of his range. He was always 4th best at anything longer than a mile last year, but certainly closer to the twins than his first runs this fall would suggest. Wonder what the track focus will be for the big 3 in 2023? I imagine they will try for a first team with 3 sub-4. Maybe there has never even been a team with 2.
And if Jesuit is fully committed to the other nationals NP will win NXN even if with a few dozen more points than in 2021.
