Also, if you watch the race, Nico and Drew Bosley did a lot of the middle leading of the race, they just didn’t have the finish. I assume they are training for the season properly and were not targeting this race.
A lot of the field? Who from the NCAA was going to finish ahead of him in 4th that just focused on track? Mayyybe Cooper Teare, that's it. All the big names that could've affected his placing pretty much showed up.
Was Nico's frosh year the xc season in the winter with a lot of the field missing?

I thought there were a couple of guys that doubled from the 5k and then beat him in the fall. In reality the difference between 4th and 11th most years is under 15s. That isn't much of a difference.
Great run by BYU, but realistically they at best they are a fringe podium team at Nationals when all teams run their varsity squads
Ok State - add Rodriguez and Foster and they beat BYU by 30+ points Stanford - add Robinson to the lineup and they beat BYU by 20+ points NAU - add Hasty and Quax and they beat BYU as well despite Kusch having a really poor race
Based on the Dave Smith comments earlier this week, sounds like one of those two OKST guys may not be running this season.
Yeah, but for BYU 4th would be good. What's the background on some of these guys. I never heard of Joey Nokes or Davin Thompson. Were these the best races they've ever had?

He did good in that race, but I don't place all my stock in one race. He got 4th, but he could have easily gotten 6th-9th in that race too. He's one of the best in the field and he could just easily have good days as he could have bad days. He's not Lawi Lalang or Edward Cheserek where he's close to unbeatable

Fringe contenders for #1, yes. But fringe for the podium? Nice try. They are definitely a top 4 team even with Bons and Troutner out. Anything can happen at nationals, but on an average day they should be top 4. Clinger, Allen(both multi-time AA/top 20) and Nokes are an incredible top 3, with impressive depth after that.
If I'm not mistaken the big reason BYU didn't have a good season was because there was a humongous gap between either their top 3 and their 4 or their top 4 and their 5 (Manz, Garnica, Clinger, I can't remember if there was a 4th in that group). Either way, the main headline I remember was that Bons couldn't keep up with the other guys. Bons was in several races where he couldn't help his team so I view that as a pretty good basis of what the guy can or can't do.
I do wonder what to make of the theory that Nico Young and Drew Bosley treated it like a tempo run and weren't motivated to see if they could duel with Hicks and Sprout at the end. Those two seem to both be dark horse title contenders and Young should theoretically be motivated for a statement win against them for a moral victory.

Creed and Davin Thompson are identical twins. They both ran at NXN as Jr's in 2019 Creed was #11, Davin #23. COVID took out any national recognition their senior year in 2020. Both are obviously huge talents.
Nokes never had any national recognition in HS, but those who follow Utah running know he's insanely talented. He was #6 in an crazy talented NXR SW in 2018, top dog from UT but ran poorly at NXN.
maybe it doesn’t change the outcome much, but a NAU runner who was in the lead group went down pretty hard on one of the big down hills. seen in the link below

The gist of what you are saying seems right, but the twins were 18 and 23 at Footlocker in ‘19, not NXN.

Thanks for the video link. They were thinking Blanks was the leader until he saw Maier in the finishing straight, as if roughly 8th or 10th were the leader. Maier has tremendous form. You could pick him out as the guy with the best form in the front pack well before that decisive move he made to take the victory. He's very much improved. Hicks and then Bosley would be 2nd and 3rd in form but Hicks is a lot better right now. Young doesn't have that kind of change of gear right now. He stands upright too much for running and his arms are all over the place and too high. With a slight forward lean like some of the other guys and more disciplined, more relaxed cadence, and letting his arms drop lower, he'd be more of a force in the run for home, despite his excellent mile and 5000m abilities.
Wetmore really let if fly in his post race comments on their site. Rare to see a coach that honest about their team and being disappointed. Sounds like Austin V could make a late season return.

Thanks for sharing. He was brutally honest. Very rare indeed.
Interesting to see George Kusche in the early lead. He is too good of a runner to blow up like he did. I would expect Kusche to be one of NAUs top guys in November.
