So is BU not faster than an outdoor track? I thought he was never supposed to break 13 outdoors since nobody runs faster than their BU times. I'm so confused.
Exactly! People acted like those BTC intramural meets in 2020 were perfectly set up time trials brillialantly orchestrated by Schumacher. They went out to a high school track with no pacing lights or fans and it was 78 F out, definitely not optimal for a fast 5k (and to that credit, I think Mo Ahmed could run faster than 12:47 with that same fitness in a race like this). The Monaco 3k and this 5k were 2 of the most time-trial DL "races" I've seen in a while. Happy for Fisher though. 4 AR's in a year is no joke.
That could very well be. But how do you know? Are you a family member or close friend? Even then you can't be totally sure.
Fisher improved his 5000 time by about 43 seconds in 2 or 3 years. Houlihan improved her 5000 time by 37 seconds in 2 or 3 years. See something similar?
Schweizer 36 seconds in 2 years ('18-'20, 15:02-14:26). Cranny 51 seconds in 2 yrs, 3 mo (Dec '19-Feb '22, 15:24-14:33 w/ a stupid negative split). Schumacher could just be a good coach, maybe these athletes are talented, maybe it's both, burritos, idk.
The first head to head of Fisher and Jakob in the 5000m. Now that will be a great race to watch!
Think we had that at the WCs
Sorry I meant to say the next head to head. On paper Fisher is now faster than Jakob over the 5000m - 12:46 vs 12:48 so they are both in the vicinity of each other in that respect. If they are both put in a 12:35- 12:40 paced race it would be exciting to see what they are both capable of. I would expect Jakob to win as he is no doubt now capable of faster than a 12:48 and he knows how to win at races but I'm sure it would still make for a great race to watch.

So we are talking up a "rivalry" between the current 5k WC and someone who didn't place on the basis of a race in which Fisher was soundly beaten by another African? Doesn't Fisher have to beat someone before he enters the conversation of a likely "rivalry" with the best?
Armstronglivs I said it was a race I'd like to watch. If it doesn't appeal to you to see these two go head to head feel free to crawl back into the hole you came out from lol

I bett it's all of the above. Plus super spikes, the perfect storm.
Kara doesn't sound even the slightest bit excited while commentating. At the bell lap she should have been on her feet screaming like the dudes in the 2010 Solinsky video. She also incorrectly stated it was Fisher's first non-time-trial record, overlooking the recent 3000.
I agree. Not a good call. When she first came on to the scene, everyone loved her. Now when I listen I have the same reaction tha tI do with every announcer, I can't help myself but think, "I could do better." I think the same thing in virtually every sport - NFL as well. So Kara shouldn't take that the wrong way. ;)
But she always tells us how they look and their form. I don't care about that. Maybe NBC told her that's what the average viewer likes. Ok i do like that a little, but mainly I like passion from the color person, excitement and stats to put it in perspective. So much of the rest of it is nonsense - he needs to do this, that, etc. As Jakob said, It's not like a runner ever purposely thinks, 'I'm going to fall off here' or not push the pace - they just can't do it.
Do the tv networks have research that says pepole don't like passion? It seems like I hardly every see Dick Vitale on basketball broadcasts for example.
But as for this call. She took a needless potshot about him only running fast in time trials. How he needs to to do it in a real race. Does she not realize that doing it with wavelight and perfect pacing for 4900 meters is easier than in a time trial?
Like how in the hell wasn't this a time trial. From the get go, it was single file. They have multiple pacers and wave light. The only difference was it was a DL and the # of competitors. When Grant ran his 10k AR, he raced the hell out of Ahmed at the end.
A paced race is a time trial.
Treat yourself to the Hutchins call on Peacock. passion to the N th degree.
our American broadcasters suck. anyone that listened to Hutchins would be jumping out of their chair, even if the had no idea what they were watching.
anyone with connection to Kara or NBC, get them to watch the last 2 laps, and listen to the master class.

Yes. You would think she has never run a race before. It's bizarre that an experienced runner would say that stuff. And unhelpful for listeners.
Moh Ahmed had a 13:34 pr at 20 and did not break that until he was 23 when he ran 13:18.88. The next two years he ran 13:10 and then 13:01. He then fell back again (13:08 and 13:03 the next two years) before breaking through to 12:58 in 2019. The next year he ran 12:47. 13 and 34 is a 47 seconds drop from normal age college times.
Chris Solinsky ran 13:42, 13:37, 13:27 at 19 through 21. Finally, as a pro in Europe after his age 22 college season, he ran 13:12. After two subsequent 13:18 years he ran 12:55. That's a 32 second drop from college, or at least from his junior year pr.
Those are Jerry's athletes as well, sure. But what about Dathan Ritzenhein? At 18, he ran 13:44.7. At 19, 13:27, a 17 second pr. He regressed the next two years, 13:39, 13:52, before running 13:22 at age 22. In 2006, he pr'd with 13:16, ran 13:16 again the next year, and then two years later dropped his pr 20 seconds in one go to run the American record of 12:56. That was a 26 second drop from college. Sure, he's a Salazar athlete.
How about Josh Kerr then? He ran the college record of 3:35. Since then he's dropped 6 seconds in the 1500m, which is like a 20 second drop in the 5000m.
Big drops happen from collegians because they are in school and usually don't or didn't in the past get a lot of opportunities to run fast paced races.
Don't forget that most track and XC athletes are student-athletes and taking real classes. I imagine once the stress of school is lifted and they can run full-time, that must help their times a lot.

In their next "head to head" I look forward to seeing Fisher finishing much like he did at the WC. That isnt quite what I thought "head to head" meant - which implies they are near equals. Not yet.
I know he didn't medal at Worlds, but is this the greatest track season by an American distance runner in the professional era (counting Lagat as mid-d)?
So many ARs. My goodness.
Why would you count the guy who wom America's only world champs gold medal in the 5000 as mid D?
