In a 5k race (high school) back in October, I experienced what I thought was the worst side stitch of my life. I recall lifting my arm up above my head while running and trying to stretch out the pain, but this didn't work and I wound up dropping out at the two mile mark because the pain was so intense. The area (mid-low right rib cage or at least in that general vicinity) was very pained for about a week, especially when breathing hard during runs (I took time off because of this). The pain gradually faded, but it has never been eliminated, even now, eight months later. It generally gets worse during harder efforts, and I think it might be inhibiting my ability to breathe with my diaphragm; an unfortunate consequence given that I was recently diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction and need to work on controlled breathing exercises. I suspect this nagging injury is also causing upper back tightness during workouts, especially short and fast intervals like 200's, which is further inhibiting my breathing. I asked a PT about it and they said to stop stretching the area and do more core, but this hasn't helped. I also got an ultrasound of the area and concluded that I do not have a hernia or a bulging organ (there is a sizeable bump near the site of the injury, which is especially noticeably when exhaling, that I had initially figured was a hernia). I have no clue what to do to fix this issue, but if anyone here has experienced this bizzare injury or has any ideas as to what this could be, please let me know. Thanks!
