Tuohy would have qualified with a bit beter tactics. She can outkick anyone. She just needed to be in it with 600 to go.

Ok, so the heat was not the reason the race was run in 15:50 pace. Wonderful. Still a slow race. I mean, so what?
Also distance running isn't sprinting.
I must have missed making any prediction that she would have a chance to qualify. I just viewed it as a good experience. She ran a bit overcautiously, but that is to be expected.
All she learned was that she couldn’t cover a surge against women with faster PRs. She did fine, though, and will see what she can do next year and in XC this Fall.
KT can "outkick anyone"? Seriously?
Have you looked at the splits? 16 of the 23 finishers ran the last lap faster than her; the top 3 ran the last lap 6+ seconds faster than her, and the next-to-last lap 7 seconds faster!
Have you watched that interview? Someone asked her whether she'd trained to kick off a slow pace. She said she had, but it hadn't prepared her to go from running "really, really slow into a 4:30 mile..."
As I said before, KT had nothing to be ashamed of. She's a college runner. A really, really good college runner. But as we saw today, the gap between even the best college runners and the best pros is huge.
She learned more. She learned felt like to race this late in the season. I also noticed is that she was not comfortable running in the pack with the pro runners and hung back as if to avoid trouble, as if she did not want to the one to screw up their race or cause someone to trip. Nichols did the same thing. That tentativeness will disappear. Say what you want about Cain, but she would elbow people out of the way while still in high school in pro races. Granted it was the 1500, but still funny to watch. KT is just not strong enough yet to compete with the top runners. But she is 20 running against runners who are mainly 24-28 so no surprise there.
Thank you! This is so important -- after the race, she said she was "freaked out" by the size of the field.
It looked like KT was just overmatched out there today. The same would have been true of the top 3-finishers when they were 20. But she is still 15-20 seconds away from them at this point in time.
her attitude is so refreshing….great interview
What I don't get is why so many pros let the Bowerman babes get away with controlling the race at such a slow pace. Especially with Schweitzer having run the 1500 the day before. At least make her work for this.
Tuohy would have qualified with a much bigger lead. She can outkick anyone. She just needed a 30 meter lead with 100 to go.
Unless your name is Abby Steiner.
Unless you are a sprinter. Happy to help even a tedious troll.
What? She didn’t run with anymore runners than anyone else in the field and I doubt there being 255 runners at NCAA XC last Fall bothered her at all. There was plenty of room for her to run and she briefly moved up at one point, but almost immediately dropped back again.
This race should put an end to the nonsense that Tuohy is the equivalent of Hocker and will win with a kick if the pace isn’t fast enough. Today’s pace was ridiculously slow but she gained no edge against the rest of the field. In the races I’ve seen Fiona O’Keeffe run, she almost always fades at the end, but today she put 10 seconds on Tuohy over the last 1600m.
She’s a great runner and a good male comparable for her is Nico Young.
She was definitely uncomfortable running in the pack. Just watch the race. Even when she moved up she then tried to find a spot closer to the rail and backed off to do so. It's not exactly surprising given her experience level in pro races.
Not sure if you are being intentionally obtuse but lets see how she can kick a few years down the line in a 5000m before we make those type of declarations. Not that complicated, even for keyboard experts. How many of the pro runners would have fared better in this type of race at age 20? And Cole Hocker? Not to break it to you, but there may be differences you overlooked.
Of course she can. She got into lane 3 for a lap which sapped some energy. Once she fell behind, she wasn't in position to kick for no reason. Had she stayed in lane 1 and stayed close to the pack, she would have had a real shot at top 3.
What differences? The two are very similar. Both are great runners with a great kick. Both emplyed bad tactics this week or they would be on the team.
True but it is kind of like trying to cycle against US Postal. Their competitors knew how doped up they were and that they were stronger as a result, to the point that it was a stacked deck. Even in a dirty sport such as cycling certain athletes were specially prepared.
Notice how many of the winners either run for BTC or used to. And I thought Schweizer was doping all the way back in college.
So she didn't make the team.
And that's okay.
Katelyn, a 20 year old phenom and the NCAA Champion in the event was outmatched in a tactical race by pro women, and 3 former Olympians nabbed the top three spots.
For her first year of college, Katelyn was outmatched by several older competitors. For her sophomore year XC season she was outmatched by only the best in the NCAA. In indoor she crept up, and in outdoor, she came out on top. For any kid, it's a process.
XC up next.

So after this meet, as much as i hate to say it, if katelyn wants to make the team in the 5000m in the future, she needs to go to BTC ... not joining new teams or joining pack friends, if she means business, becoming a bowerman babe is the way to go

She did fine, ran as fast as she could and doesn’t need off the wall excuses. Like anyone else, her kick will improve as she gains strength.
