Beadlescomb and all the others referred to earlier are at least 23+ years old, come on now, some over 27, they should surely be running faster at multiple distances earlier and more often lol
This! Thank you. People here keep repeating the same s***, that if you dont make the team you are done. Guess Potato Tim were done after last years trials, right? Right?
You honestly isnt comparing Hobbs with Timothy? And why do you use the degoratory term "potato Tim"? Shut up and have some respect.
To add on to this, making team is somrthing completely else in Kenya or in the US. Some people here completely lack perspective.

Eh.The point is Hobbs ran 1:49.67 in HS competition last year on May 8th. This year so far has been a tough one and again the 1:49.97 didn't really show much as far as good things. This race last night I'm going to watch on YouTube, but it's a slight step forward based on the data. Definitely better than the race in Ohio. Hobbs is a pro so we don't have to baby him as far as where he's at. If he runs at World Juniors (which would be great), then we can evaluate him vs his age group, but as it stands he's going to have to compete against the older guys and he has the PB/talent to do so. I would be similarly critical of Vincent Keter (last year's world Junior champ) as he seems to be behind last year in his bigger races so far. Still bullish on their futures.
Overall he looked OK. It's not great that he kinda easily let not only the top 3 go, they're beyond his fitness, but also didn't even connect onto the larger second group. This wasn't a deceptive 3:38 or whatever (minus maybe they're being some wind). This is his general fitness at the moment, and he'd have to work hard to make it out of the first round of USAs at this juncture. He is super talented and there is time, though.
Wow, you are tough to please. I think you need to look at my Post on perspective here, He missed a month and you are riling about how he looked as a 19 and three month Old, when he would be the th fastest non 22+ year old going into th NCAA meet? Hocker beat him by 2 seconds and every guy was multiple seconds off their best , it was clearly windy as the times were slow in every event except one? His time last night, much more like what he is or was to begin with is the 7th fastest U.S. Junior mark ever, by only four performers..Ryun, Webb , Tom Byers and Kessler, two of them now are his . I think you are way too critical, and I am way too biased..LOL
Since he has chosen to forgo NCAA competition to go pro, yet is still U20 (Junior). then that Championship should be his focus - not the trials. Still May, lots of time to prepare for that meet.
There is another World Championship next year (Budapest), then OG (Paris) the following year. Whether he makes either team then may be open for discussion, but that it then, not now. Chill, why are you people in so much of a hurry to see him fail or even pass judgment. Sure as heck hope that none of you coach - you would be awful at it. No long-term vision, which is essential for a good coach.
Hobbs has maybe the best mid distance coach ever and his mentor is an all time great 1500m runner. He is in good hands. Its still very very early in the season and I would bet that his support staff will have his peak timed correctly. If Hobbs make the 1500m final at USAs that will be an outstanding accomplishment. If he doesn't, no big deal as he is so young and will have plenty of races the rest of the summer and early fall to run fast.
Thank you to Stu and king99 for their balanced perspectives. Hobbs is going to be fine with his world class team around him who have been through the process dozens of times. Contrast that with Alan Webb and his team, or lack thereof. And he turned out OK in terms of times and national titles. Hobbs will learn to race tactically with world class competitors, something that Alan never could. He has huge talent, and many advantages to look forward to.
Another point of comparison with Hobbs might be Tuohy, and the fact she also was being questioned and/or written off in the 2 years post-HS. She has turned it around, and seems to be on a great track, doing OK this year, with some excellent high level college coaching behind her. Is anyone still questioning her future upside at this point?
I think Hobbs will improve a bit this week. Ronnie knows what he is doing. Progress is not always linear. Sometimes you go slightly backwards to sideways before another drop.

Fortunately for Tuohy she had ncaa competition where she could have success. Kessler is going to have to take his lumps and finish in the back of races he does. It is just not ideal for development. Part of how we perceive success is relative to those around us. Ideally he would’ve had at least one year in ncaa.
Like I have said over and over..you take this particular deal when it presents itself..period. There is NO other position, trust me.
If you missed this train, there will always be a new latest and greatest Hot Shot to grab that sort of deal and your proposed money offer, these do not come around much , not the offer he got anyway. I see your Name on here is NIL deal?
How is that concept working for College MD-Distance running? Hmmm..I thought so.

He ran 1:49 against high school season back when his season started way sooner. How can you compare early season races to his PRs at the end of last year? That's insane to do for middle distance runners.
Go behind the scenes for VNTC's trip to the USATF Distance Classic from Mt. Sac, California. Ronnie gives the weekend a big "Very Nice" for everyones solid ...
What happened to Hobbs Kessler? He listened to Ron, who was never panicked, not ever, and for those that know Ron, he is one of the funniest and great guys to hang out with . He shut up, and followed the plan. My guess is based on this 2.2 or so second drop in about a week, he should approach 3:35.x soon. As Malmo alluded to on another thread. Kessler now has 3 of the top 8 U20 marks ever run All Time, and 2 of the top 3. Look at the list, some of those guys were pretty frigging good, for those that do not know Tom Byers(who Malmo mentioned), go back and watch some stuff on youtube.. Bislett '81 is when he was the rabbit I believe, everyone let him go and he crushed the field , even with Ovett closing in 52 .From 1975 , my Senior year when you got ALL your info once a month in T & F News, until 1980, he did not improve, He ran 3:37.5 at 19 and ran 3:50.84, when that was really fast. He was a gifted , gifted runner.
