I think most people underestimate how difficult it is to run downhill well. It takes a high amount of technique (and fitness) to run technical descents fast and smooth saving energy for the next climb (and next climb etc.)
Good to see him back out there! I can imagine it's a tough thing to toe the line after illness and being away for so long (and hell, being older in general). But let's be honest - he probably has never made most of his money via racing - it's through his YouTube and coaching. So race because he loves it/wants to. I personally love to see people getting back out there even when they aren't as competitive as they used to be. It's weird to me when people walk away from a sport because they are no longer winning.
Also, there's a chance he only raced because he needed the UTMB points. Seems like Hoka is pretty much forcing (errrr strongly encouraging) all of their athletes to run one of the UTMB races.
Please stop with this "behind two women" sexist stuff. Gender really only matters when handing out medals. He ran a decent race. Got beat by some faster people. He is still on the road to recovery. No need to point out that women beat him as if that adds some extra level of shock or shame or something.

There is nothing wrong with finishing behind women. For most people if you haven’t been beaten before you haven’t raced in the best fields. The very best women are still about 10% slower than the best men. If you want to evaluate how you finish as an elite it matters though. If a top US marathoner finishes behind women it is an indication he didn’t race well.
In this instance prior to the race Sage was talking about what he would do with a golden ticket. They give out 2 per gender. So if you wouldn’t get a ticket even in the woman’s field that seems relevant to evaluating a performance. I would guess that in the past it was pretty rare for Sage to be beat by women.
Hello Sandy!!! nice to see you back on Letsrun! come on! two women beated Sage! before all those events he can barely make it to top 5, now he cant even get top 10 overall
Hey Sage, why aren’t you speaking out on the dangers of the vax? You have a gigantic platform, use it. Don’t be a coward and believe it was from a fake virus. Stand up for others who were harmed.
Finished 20th, 1 hour 53 back. Behind two women. A finish is a finish, but I’m sure he is disappointed.

Why is it "sexist" to say he was beaten by two women? Have the stopped having separate awards/standings/races for men and women? Is it now commonly believed that women are just as fast as men and so there will no longer be a separation in sport?
I guess I am wrong - but it seems significant that a pro male runner finishes behind female runners. To me, it said something about his current fitness. If I was back racing in college and female runners were beating my times, it would be a concern. But that was back when men were thought to be faster than women, which is no longer the case, you are saying?
Given what Sage went through I thought this was a great comeback for him and I look forward to him getting his fitness back and doing well.

He can say whatever he wants. don’t force your opinion on him.
