Who "fast" is the L.A. marathon course. I seriously thinking of doing that race in march. How "flat" is it? My goal is run sub 2:30. Thanks people!

"Who fast?"
Ran L.A. in 2002.
The course may have changed a little since then.
Was all bitumen apart from some small strips on the edge of a couple of streets.
Little or no shade.
It is quite steeply downhill initially, levels out and then has a few hills in the last few miles before a nice little downhill section at the last mile.
I found the hills no big deal.
Actually neg split it by 8 minutes. This may have been because of going out to conservatively.
All in all a great Marathon.Crowd support is exellent.
The expo was great and apart from a 40minute delay at the start due to a security problem it was well organised.
I would recommend it to anyone.
As far as running a p.r. I did but it was only my second Marathon and I have carved 20 minutes off that time since.
There are easy Marathons around but few that are as enjoyable.
I ran it a couple of years ago and didn't think the course was particularly fast. There are a lot of turns and several short sharp climbs, overpasses etc which break up your rhythm. You are also climbing from around miles 20-25...its not steep, but at that stage in the race you don't really want any sort of climb.
I dunno what course that last guy ran but when I ran it there was a distinct uphill finish...you run up the same hill you go down at the start.
The weather also sucked. It was 90 degrees at the finish. If you're looking to run around 2:30 you'll also be alone for the whole race. This race has a bunch of Kenyans at the front a big gap for 45 minutes and then the rest of the field.
It is very well organized and supported, but lots of cheering won't make up for lousy weather if you're looking for a 2:30.
Obviously there have been some course changes.

good luck.
Ran in 2001 and 2002. Course changed both years, and it may have changed since. There are no major hills from what I remember, but since the course inevitably takes a tour of Hollywood, you can't avoid some gain in elevation as you head outside downtown. The result on the old course was several long, insidious climbs that may look flat and some slow miles in the second half.
