So I started running as a way to cope with depression, and I got hooked on my morning 5k. I never thought of 3 miles as particularly far, so I didn't think i needed to build distance or take special care of my body, but now I'm paying the price. It's been two months of shin splints, and I want them gone so I can start right. Problem I'm facing is how to exercise to my satisfaction while in recovery. My ideal exercise is outside with my dog, but my brother, the marathoner, told me I shouldn't even be walking extended distances. Can anyone offer advice on how to cope with the emotional difficulties, as well as practical tips on what I should or shouldn't be doing? Google says 2-4 weeks. Is this accurate? As well as how to build up distance without hurting myself.
