Overheard a coach telling athletes to shut their mouth and only breathe through their nose when running fast to “help them relax.”

Because it just feels good.

A funny story: a couple seasons ago the cross-country team I coach had a complete lack of talent. The day after one meet, one kid says at practice, "My dad played football in high school and he says the reason we are so bad is you aren't making us breath through our noses." Acting like I am a real expert, I made them all run a few laps around the track while I looked intently at their faces When they came back, I announced, very matter of factly; "The problem isn't that you are not breathing through your nose, it is that you not breathing through your nose and mouth. at the same time" Now the only way you can do that is to grit your teeth, spread your lips to show your teeth , arch your eyebrows and title your head back sa you inhale. The effect is to look like a vampire about ready to bit. The next meet I made the kids breath that way every 15 strides. I kept yelling at them "mouth and nose" and they would look like they were going into a fit._It was hilarious but everyone on the team ran 30 seconds faster.

Nobody does that.

they are bored and need something to do/say to sound like they have good insight...alot of these crazy ideas logic starts their. They would be better off running while their athletes are so they remember what its like to be active, training, and the ups and downs that you go through daily
this is 90% of the reason I still run even though im long past expired.
In brass musical instrument playing its the secret to playing continuously without breaking the melodic line. So there ya go...
...keeping your mouth closed prevents the body from dehydrating too rapidly
I don’t never did . So . Lots of bad coaches out on the tracks .

Oh man. Do people actually believe this?
My theory is that these coaches are trying to get them to stop focusing on the pain with a distraction. Or they are merely morons. Hard to tell.
I was told nose breathing cuts dehydration by 42%. I never questioned it...till now.

Bad, bad advice. No physiological evidence to support this.

Exactly. Or parents at a soccer game yelling for the kid the "boot" the ball upfield.
OMG yes. You immediately know who doesn't know a damn thing about soccer when some yells "boot it."
If it's 5 year olds playing 4x4, then boot it can make sense.

Please tell me that’s a joke.

If you're truly interested in the topic of breathing, and more specifically nasal breathing, James Nestor's book, Breathe, is good place to start. James Nestor was on The Joe Rogan Experience awhile ago, so you could opt to listen to that instead of reading the book.
I scrolled through the thread to make sure this book was mentioned. An enlightening read.
noses are for breathing and mouths are for eating (and once you are married, kissing)...

On a related note, what you guys think of belly breathing?
Personally i find it helpful with stitch.
side stitch is trapped intestinal gas. Clear your gut before running and it won't happen.
