Here’s my idea to use the NCAA to improve American marathoning. An NCAA 30k road championship around the time of the indoor track championship. Not necessarily the same weekend. Hold it in a southern part of the country. Also, let it be open to all three divisions. That way there’s a large enough field. It would be fun to see how the divisions compete. Could even score it as an XC team race.
Why? The winter is the perfect time for collegiate 10k athletes to do marathon type training. Also 10k athletes don’t have a race for them in indoor track, so you’re not hurting a track teamed performance in indoor by having a 10k guy not there. This though would be a good opportunity to develop the athletes whom will move to the marathon soon after college. Also, by it being 30k and not a full marathon the athletes will recover faster from the race. Therefore, it will not impede on their outdoor track season. Actually the training for a 30k will act as an amazing base for their 10k track abilities.
The thing about East Africa and Japan is that they start with marathon training and move down. We should try something similar in America.
