I'm originally from the east coast, so I say Vanny is more legendary with a greater all-time list among those with top times. If you could hold the course record on any prep xc course in the US, which would be most prestigious?

VCP, no question.

Any other course close to VCP in importance?
I was in the race in 1979 against Ed Healy when he ran 12:30. I think it was the Manhattan College Invite. One of my first varsity races, and was with him head to head across the starting field to the woods. Probably set my personal 800 m record. Then of course I blew up and finished close to last. I think our team still medaled.
What team were you on?
Farrell alum here.
Detweiller Park, Peoria
I'd say Van Cortlandt would be more prestigious than Mt. Sac, simply because it's probably known among more runners.
Scarsdale HS. Not a team that ran against your team often. We were no powerhouse, but in 1979 and 1980 we had strong teams. In 1979 we were the NYSPHSAA Section 1, Class AA champions.

Detweiller is no where close and a joke of a course.

Maybe a better question would be VCP versus Balboa Park in terms of importance and prestige of holding the course record or being on the top 25 list?
A lot of elites don't even run VCP anymore since NXN. Another knock against VCP is that it has the 4k and 5k courses, so each course really just has one big meet a year, and the quality of FLNE is on the decline.
WEll, VCP has hosted NCAA XC and many other collegiate meets along with USATF champs, so historically it is THE most famous course. Pre and Lindrgen have run there.
What would be interesting is the opinion of athletes who have/had run both in High School. I bet that list is tiny.

It certainly used to be the case, at least, that top CA teams would come out to VCP for the big invitationals--in an effort to get big-meet experience against other elite teams (and also to boost their national rankings). I suspect many of those teams would have run both courses.

I read an interview with Ed Eyestone when he retired. They asked him if he had any regrets. He said- I never ran VCP.
End of thread!!!

It seems like now it is all about NXN and Glendoveer. That's a shame that the national level xc championship meets do not rotate around many different and historic courses on a regular basis. VCP seems to have become just a local NYC course and no more important, or less so now, than Holmdel or Sunken Meadow or many others.
We brought out our CA team three times to run VCP. Our teams also ran Mt. SAC and Woodward Park (CA state meet). We loved our trips to NY and the Manhattan College Invite was a great experience for our kids. Several of our runners benefited from the exposure to VCP standards. They eventually competed for Cornell, Boston College, Columbia, Harvard, to name a few schools. Now to the differences. The atmosphere of the Manhattan College Invite was fantastic and better than the MT SAC Invite. The course at VCP is a tough spectator course and MT SAC course is easier to follow the runners during a race. Mt. SAC's course is deceptively fast (and a little short after the fences were installed) once runners become experienced with its downhills. VCP is also a very fast course although the start has a long straight of grass as opposed to Mt SAC having no grass on its course. Now for my wrench thrown at your premise window. I believe the Woodward Park course in Fresno, California is a better course than VCP or Mt. SAC. The course has varied terrain, a legitimate length, and is great for spectators.
