+1 👍
I've used it for years, but I no longer recommend it. I learned that runners were incapable of following directions on how to use it. Paint it on with a cotton ball or tissue. Do not rub it in. Do not cover it. If it burns, rinse the area with cold water. Sounds simple, but apparently the "Do not rub it in" is impossible to follow. I've explained how to use it, given it to runners, and then watched them rub it in not 30 seconds after I admonished them not to. Amazing.
I've also noticed that it works much better if used in the first 24 hours after an injury.
Isn't it some kind of solvent? What's it supposed to do for sore muscles?
Yes-DMSO is Dimethylsulfoxide, which in an aprotic solvent. Used it for soft tissue injuries in the mid-to-late 1980s, when running in college. I actually think it helped, at least a bit, but it sure gave me some strange garlic breath!
My understanding is that DMSO was/is an industrial solvent that was "used" on horses, not "made" for horses. If this is correct, your thread title of "DMSO is for horses..." is misleading and untrue.

Back in the day, I saw people use it to transport analgesics directly to an injury and the DMSO would act as a vehicle

Yes. I realize that it helps transport medicine through cell walls, but the OP is implying that DMSO works on its own. What is the mechanism that DMSO (a solvent) uses to help sore muscles?

It does. Apply it to a swollen/inflamed area, and watch it go away. I put it on by itself on a swollen ankle, and within 45 min the ankle was smaller and wrinkly from the stretched skin. Used it on mammoth pimples too. Take's them down. You're welcome.

I've used it a few times glazing it on with paper towel. I did buy it at a health food store and was always told to rinse off. I've done the following: roll out affected area(s) to get circulating then paint on with paper towel 45 minute dwell time rinse off with cold water.
I've heard DMSO gives one severe halitosis. For me, BCAA's have been great for sore muscles and recovery.

Yes, it will carry low molecular weight drugs into your system, potentially with an enhanced local effect. This is why it's important to be careful how it's applied and that everything is clean. The mechanism for relief of pain and inflammation using pure dmso isn't well understood. It enters your system very rapidly and can be tasted in seconds. It can also be toxic.
It is better to buy a transdermal compounding base if you want to make your own ointment including testosterone cream. Just make sure it's rated for the type of molecule and molecular weight in question.

Why do you say this?
I ask because I know one of his college teammates who said he went through so much DMSO it was laughable. He even used it on a toothache according to my source.

I saw it mentioned on here he did a sports illustrated article with it
https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=3979358DMSO is now available as a prescription drug under the name Pennsaid.
There is a mild cream form of DMSO mixed with aloe. Much easier on the skin. It is a chemical solvent, thus with the economical stuff do you really know what you are spreading on yourself? The veterinarian grade is probably more pure, but a vet can lose their license by giving it to humans.
Pennsaid is a prescription form of voltaren cream that uses DMSO as a carrying agent. It is very expensive - more than $300 a tube.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
