In brief:
Recently I cannot seem to get past 7:00 pace in workouts, (sometimes it's 7:20-30), without completely falling apart. I was blaming the Summer heat, but runs lately have been pretty temperate and I still blow up.
I really seem to struggle to breathe. I start having these short shallow breaths, HR shoots up, and I'm toast. Also my legs have no "pop" no energy- I always feel sluggish like I've run a 20 miler the day before, even when I've taken a day or two off and even when I'm doing an "easy" run. (Easy ain't been easy lately.)
My initial ideas:
- just pull way way back- back to just very basic daily runs of 3-5 miles or so until that feels easy, and just increase weekly mileage, bag workouts other than a progression run when it feels right.
- get tested for some type of deficiencies or imbalance. I eat a decent diet but I am 53, so who knows if I'm anemic or low T or what.
- I've been doing 2 resistance workouts a week, but mostly upper body and core. I avoided leg day (cliché I know) but I'm running 6 days a week.
I haven't had a good run in about 2 months, so I feel like something is wrong. I tried adding an additional rest day per week and that didn't help, so now my natural inclination as a distance runner is to "just do more."
Any ideas?
