I heard this on the podcast and was surprised Jake would break this news before Chris. It’s not really Jake’s story to tell.

Fernandez was a better talent than Rupp.
Really feels like Chris has withered not only his running career away but a lot of his otherwise professional career. On the flip side, you have Donn Cabral (who actually made Olympic teams) hustle to get professional degrees and actually be employable... oh and he's marrying a (medical) doctor, so he has that going for him too with the whole steady income stream. Chris could've learned a few things about life in general there..
Curious to hear what Cabral did during his running days.
I think CD made the decision to go with Bowerman which is going “all in”. There’s no part time school when you run for Jerry. Donn joined Gags’ group (and maybe other groups?) which has much less structure.
In retrospect, sure Chris should have done other stuff. But at the time, hard to fault someone for going to the best group in the US.

Once he’s done running, I hope he remains in the sport a la Merber.
If Derrick assumes a Merber-esque role after he retires it would be a tragedy. He should get some soulless consulting job for Stanford econ majors who are convinced not only of their own genius but also that anarchic free market hypercapitalism actually works for anyone but the C-suite. He can coach a HS team in the afternoons.
This. The kid is whip smart, and affable to boot.

I mean, Cabral made two Olympics and a Worlds team in the steeplechase.

Yup, with CD repeatedly running himself into the ground maybe "all in" wasn't the right thing. Cabral had a much better career.

As much as I would enjoy seeing him return to his old form and go sub 2:10, my hope for CD is that he starts running some beautiful mountain trails outside of Boulder, falls in love with the alpine, gives up the roads, stays healthy, and eventually becomes one of America's best ultra runners with a widely-read blog.
I love this idea.

I imagine Chris made a bit more money in his running career nonetheless.

Eh I am not to sure.... and cabral got a MBA/JD when we was running so I think he will come out on top in the end.
CD invested his winnings early in tesla and made millions, so i'm not sure about that...

Absolutely do not disagree at all, but thats with the added benefit of hindsight. Hard to hold it against CD for choosing the all-in route when he was 21.
All of Elliott Heath's athletes, including Derrick, bombed in Chicago.
I get why posters are saying it makes sense to stay with Jerry, but at the same time, Jerry hasn’t particularly nailed the marathon (especially on the men’s side). Ended the careers of Bairu and Nelson, Solinsky 2.0 never made it there, and CD/Bumbalough got stuck in that 2:12 range. For all his success on the track and with Shalane in the marathon, it never translated for the men’s side.
I’d love to see Chris pop a good one, but at this point, I can’t say I’m expecting it. Hopefully a change of scenery does him well and he proves me wrong.

But that is pretty much where all American (non-East African) men end up. Maybe if they had the carbon shoes, they would have fared 90 secs to 2 minutes faster. Rupp is a rare exception and a somewhat dubious one at that because of Salazar taint.

I heard it was Bitcoin.
Anyone know if he is training still? How is it going?
