she was in it for time and winning. she didn't care to pop up get 2nd and run a still disappointing time.
any goal she had was already lost at that point
I would love to see the opinions of some of these hot shot posters after they have run the last two laps of a hard steeple. But they are just sideline experts who never had the guts or skills to contest a steeple. Way to get after it Emma!
After this, Emma should feel ready to medal. Gold even, for sure. Great run. Slips happen.

Lol why would you find joy in what is most likely a doper passing someone else? Would you also be happy seeing Houlihan dust Abby Dags in the last lap of a race? Probably not.
So, Chepkoech is now a doper?
Wow!
The things people say.
Irregardless. Chepkoech has the best form of any female athlete, and is easily 8:45 with that.
Oh, and Chepkoech is rounding into form. This in no way implies Emma has bad form.

I'm sure a better one will come along soon, but if you don't want to wait and don't care about the bad quality and odd audio, here you go. You have been warned.

When someone is chasing a record (national record, personal record, etc.), they operate on a razors edge. She pushed herself to the limit and came up short. Jager did the same thing. I appreciate the effort and putting herself out there. You only lose when you don't try. Hats off to her effort.
This, times 1, 000, 000 and this is the only appropriate comment on this thread.

Looked like Kiyeng moved a bit to the outside on the last water jump and Coburn may have had to make a last second adjustment going in to the jump, getting her feet tangled up. Coburn may have been looking to pass on the outside and had to shift back to the inside to avoid a collision.
Of course, that's life on the steeple. But it really didn't look like Coburn choked.

Why even used this word ?

Agreed. There was a little weirdness there. Before the water jump, when Kiyeng slowed and looked like she was done then picked it back up again as Emma approached, Emma had to adjust to that some as far as her intention to pass. Kiyeng was erratic and Emma was having to pay more attention to her due to this. I saw a weird flinch from Emma that makes me think she was trying to avoid contact of some sort as they started the waterjump. I don't think Kiyeng did anything wrong but I think her movement distracted Emma for just a millisecond at the wrong time and Emma had a lapse in concentration. I thought so right when it happened. Maybe Emma just tired but that was my read.

yeah. there was weird lane switching stuff going on a couple times in that last lap.
Literally. haha
Ray, I couldn't disagree with your race ass-essment more. EC's stated intention was to try and run sub 9. They were at 6 flat through 2k, ie perfect pace. Perfect race up until that point. At the bell lap, it looked they had slipped 1-2 second off sub 9 pace (I'll have to go back and confirm), so it makes perfect sense she tried to speed up when she saw that split. She was clearly on the edge that last 400m and it had nothing to do with bad tactics... she was just redlining at max effort. It looked like she may have gotten distracted for a split second or even made contact with the leader on that last water barrier, but regardless, she was clearly fatigued... combination resulted in not getting her foot high enough on the barrier. I personally don't think she was going to break 9, but it's reasonable to think she would have been close if she stayed upright.
I would say that up until the fall, she ran to near perfection for her best chance to go sub 9. Tough break in a tough event, but she should be able to get under 9 some time soon if she stays healthy. Not quite the soul-crushing fall that Jager had when he was a lock for sub 8.
Cheers to Emma- she went for it and is clearly fit. Olympics will be exciting.
Another non-reading idiot I see. Where did I say it had anything to do with bad tactics? You basically just repeated what I said and argued about something I didn't say. She clearly sped up because she saw Kiyeng dying, I don't consider that a bad tactic, I consider it to be impatience. She thought she had more than she did and now she knows. If you are gong to call someone an a$$, make sure that's not the only word you know how to read.
Better here than in Tokyo. Lesson learned!
