This isn't football or basketball where the coach gets axed for poor strategy leading to poor results in the playoffs. I doubt Iowa States AD cares about that.
This is probably one of the very few cases in Division I where the AD would notice and care that the top athletes have poor strategy. If you want to put a positive spin on it, you would emphasize that Pollard was a pretty good D3 distance runner and his son was a great Iowa high school runner. He actually cares and pays attention.
If you wanted to put a negative spin on it, you would emphasize that Pollard always seems to want to be the smartest guy in the room and thinks he knows everything. Keep in mind that he lost Ihmels to Boise State even though he was an ISU alum. I always thought that was weird at the time. He also lost another alum, Cael Sanderson, who was the wrestling coach, and that program has struggled ever since while Sanderson has won a million titles at Penn State.
