Official announcement:
I know no details and will not speculate.
Anything to do with how poorly Kiptoo and Kurgat ran? Sudbury seems very up and coming. I wonder if they will hire him on full time
According to the cyclones.com press release, Iowa State's AD stated it was his "personal observations" that led to him making a change. Iowa State's AD's son is also on the team, so wonder if his experiences with Smith might have better informed those personal observations
Jerry Baltes just won nationals, maybe they are lining up their man for the next 20 years. Smith is old
Maybe it was the 6 hour practices, 2 hour long pre practice speeches, or maybe just the underperforming of top individuals when it mattered.
6 hour practices.. their distance runners are doing 60 mile runs?

I was always curious if Smith even tried to tell Kiptoo to not take races out in suicidal paces or at least tone it down a bit. Either he was ok with this dumb tactic or he couldn't get one of his top athletes to listen to him (also bad).

Pre-run WU/stretching, running, WU/CD jogs if workout day, core, weight lifting, listening to Martin rant for 2 or more hours about the topic of the day
source: I ran for Martin Smith at Iowa State
I have always heard that Martin is/was a nutjob. I have heard this from several people that have been around him at some point. This goes back to his time in Wisconsin.
Is this because of his association with BTC and therefore Jerry...FYI, if you are new here, Martin was Jerry's college coach.

Do you think it possible that Kiptoo was burnt out by outdoor nationals?
3 events at outdoor conference; 2 events at Regionals; 2 events at NCAA's. And consider his indoor nationals/cross country nats back-to-back.
Fair?
Jeremy S is coaching ALL of the Kenyans. If they didn’t perform, it’s on him
Sorry but it all falls on the HC. I’ve heard from another former runner that his rants are legendary. Jaime Pollard the AD should have known about this for years. His son is a senior. Wonder if there was something specific this year.
Yes for sure. And he didn’t even have to run those Big12 races as hard as he did.

Soon to be seventh year

Jerry Schumacher took Martin’s training and modernized it. Jeremy has been coaching the Kenyan guys and mid D guys. We’ve seen those results the past few years. Don’t measure one meet, look at the body of work. He will also modernize Martin’s methods and the team will go to the next level. This is great for the program.
We are not, we are evaluating two of the biggest meets this year. Regionals and NCAA

Kurgat and Kiptoo would not be at ISU without Jeremy. The middle distance success is his work.

Yes, you can bet that father and son had many conversations over the years. His observations were most likely a combination of the coach being an arrogant, stand-offish coach that was not athlete centered and liked to hear himself more than listen to his athletes. The assistant was doing the work of helping the athletes succeed but they were required to run too many events in a covid affected schedule. Smarter programs with a lot less talent looked a lot better last week. So yeah, AD Pollard's observations were probably a combination of a lot more info/data than most AD's give a crap about their programs.
Great news for the program and the athletes of the future. They need a leader that can help the culture become a more positive experience for the student athletes.
