If he really didn't care about the shoes be would have had a totally different demeanor when responding to the question.
A smirk followed by a "oh I don't know, maybe 5 second or so, but.." then going into the whole 'heart' and 'competition' rant.
So your evidence that you think they work as springs is because you believe it to be so.

What a JOKE!
HE wants to dispel spikes but he wore them. And he will wear them for every other meet.
Not only is it an obvious speed booster, we cant dispel the psychological edge it gives against others who aren't wearing them.
Just as much as those NOT wearing feel disadvantaged.
So go ahead Teare, forget barefoot, just dont wear them the next time you run.
Let your feet do the talking.

Another point: How else could he have answered this question anyway?
"Oh yes Im sure they spikes played a role in how fast I ran. Probably saved me 3 or 4 seconds"?
He'd never admit to that.
i tried wrapping my feet like a boxer does his hands, but primitively and only a small layer, and ran a test mile sub 5 minute pace on wood chip trail in eugene.
it was a fast "shoe'
but wood chips got between the toes,
but it worked well.
you want little spikes sticking out somehow with the wrap. as you could feel the traction was not perfect on wood chips...
guys can debunk the shoes are everything theory by going back to nature more or less.
ideally, with the foot wrap, i'd put a small layer of hard thin rubber about 1/12 inch on the bottom of the foot before the wrap, a bit of protection and support.
maybe you only need like a couple of small spikes at the ball of the foot
which brings to mind, that runners want to be doing ankle and foot exercises.
you c an work that in the off season, break, to get the basic strength and flexibility.
it is a big deal.
