I coach HS XC and track. We have one of the better teams in the state with about 5 guys typically breaking 16 minutes every year. Those same guys normally make up the 4x8 and 3 of 4 spots on the 4x4. Our 4x4 ran 3:22 this year with 3 XC guys on it. Our 4x8 ran 7:54. Those same guys can hit 23 flat on the last rep of a workout with a rolling start. One of the guys this year ran 22.9 in an actual 200. Kessler is about 10 seconds faster in the 800 and 25 seconds faster in the mile than any of my guys were this year. To think that he couldn't run 22.5 in an open 200 is silly.

Well then it is silly. Nick Willis says Kessler can run 200m in 23.6.
And if your guys run 22.9 they got no business running XC since they are 400/800m guys.
brb calculating my 100m time based on how much faster i am than usain bolt in a 5k

Well Bolt certainly could have run a 11min 5k based on his pure speed!

He said around 23.4. Stop opportunistically remembering stuff. I would still put even money on 23 flat but 23.4 seems like the final answer.
Another Michigander ran 15:25 in XC. He may be the Olympic champ in 800 this year. I guess hostile spent in XC didn't hurt him. And he ran way under 23.

think hobbs has a shot at the 600m world record?
Makes me question why all these talented speed based kids are running XC and 5k. Either someone is lying about their speed or their coaches suck.
A 400/800m runner has no business on a XC course.
So you think faster than Coe. That makes no sense
The top HS 800 runners in the country are also the top XC runners.

how many of those XC runners will go on to run 1:46? probably none of them.
of the top 20 800m runners in the NCAA this year, only 9 even have a sub-4 mile equivalent. i think i gave some frosh with a 3:43 1500m the benefit of the doubt too.

Indeed! Give him a few years of development and some true international experience and see then what he's managed to achieve. But from the footage I have seen of him so far I do believe he's got some very rare raw speed which he can still develop considerably. I don't know what Coe was running 200m wise when he was 18 but I would hazard a guess that it wasn't the 21.8ish that he ultimately maxed out at.
Kessler could get faster with time, I'm talking about his speed abilities right now. But somehow I got a feeling that he is just gonna move up to 5k in the next years and gonna make a world class 5k runner.
Just like Willis, as he was also too white to be good in the 1500... oh wait

Anyone know what Kessler can run a flat out 200m or 400m in? I'm guessing he could probably manage a 22.5/48.5. His closing speed is absolutely world class for the middle distances.
If he can run 22.5, he should be able to run faster than 48.5. More like 47 flat, which I doubt.
No. Double and add 4. 20=44. 21=46. 23=50.
Your logic woukd have guys runnibg sub 42.
Many will run 1:46. Check the top US 800 runners. Most ran XC and were good.
even that list is more likely to contribute on a 4x400 than an ncaa xc squad.
how do you define "good at xc"
Athing Mu and Hobbs Kessler have pretty much the same PBs in 200m and 400m.
Can only think that 1:57 in 800m for Mu can't be the limit.
Not all that silly.
I'd guess 22.2 and 46.5 w running start.
Ryun ran high ~22 hand timed on a 4x 220y relay.
Times from blocks don't mean anything for middle distance.
Running start make more sense.

More like 23.6 and somewhere between 49 and 50.
23.6. is what Nick Willis has supposedly said.
