Her best bet of making the Olympic team is easy. Pull an Alexia Pappas and find another country to run for.
Here's a question I have. Since the country you represent seems to be controlled your sport's governing body -world Athletics - not the IOC - is in charge of change of allegiance petitions for track athletes, does that mean you could compete for two different countries in the Olympics as long as it's different sports without going through a sittng out period? Since Gwen has never run for the US, could she get approved to run for say Ireland without the normal sitting out period? If the answer is yes, then where do you draw the line, if anywhere. Could someone be American in the triathlon but Irish when they run - at the same Olympics? Now that would be cool. Two sports but different countries in the same Olympics.
Or could you do one for a summer Games for one country and another for the Winter Games? Could you ski for the US and the curl for Canada?
Let me know if you have the answer.
If you think this is a totally crazy question, it's not. Yes it's an intellectual exercise for me but let me remind you in Connecticut, they currently let you run boys track in indoors and girls track in outdoors.
If she stays for the US, her best case is in the 5k. Some of the big names will be in the 1500 so making the final isn't out of the question for a 15:08 runner. Once she makes the final, she hopes for a tactical race (which rarely happens in women's running) that results in a fall late in the race that takes out 4-5 people. Instead of finishing 10, she finishes 4th or 5th and gets in when a few of the people also make the 10k team and decide to let her run that. Of course, I've never seen a 5k fall wipe out 4-5 key contenders. Another possibility would be covid positives that take out a few key contenders.
She's 20 seconds behind our #5 5k runner so let's face the facts - she's not making the team but Gwen is a GREAT story. I think it's really cool she went for her passion. It's like MJ going to baseball. Why not? You dont want to live life with regrets. Som runners are jealous of all the attention she's she in my mind is like DK Metcalfe. SHe deserves it. I
