I was listening to the recent Morning Shakeout Podcast interview of Shalane and was a bit depressed at how she described her role with the team. She started by highlighting how rare it was to have women coaches of elite/professional teams, but then when she answered questions about her specific role, it seemed to involve very little actual coaching. Rather, her main contributions were advisor/whisperer to the women on the team and hiring her former PT to work with the team.
I share this not to knock her, but rather to highlight that unlike other elite training environments, where the "assistant" coach is given a small stable of athletes to primarily train (see former Salazar approach), Shalane seems to have been relegated to a role of supporter and advocate (important, but not real, comprehensive coaching).
I like what Jerry is doing overall and respect him as a coach, but I think he should invest more in Shalane, as I think she could grow into a true elite-level coach with the right opportunities.
