Yes there is an absolute. He asked how slow of a 1600 can be run and still break 10 minutes. He didn't ask about the average or a typical one or the fastest one. I said 4:52 but sounds like there me even a slower one posted now.

Did you run track in HS? There was no teammate or runner from another HS that could have run 10:00 with a mile PR of 4:52 or slower. If 8 seconds was possible, maybe Webb could have run 8:02.
I ran 13:45 for 5k. I now coach High School Track and XC. We have won 4 state titles. So yes, I probably am a bit more familiar with times than you are.

What did you run in HS?
400m
800m
1600m
3200m

OK. What were your 1 and 2-mile PRs?
My PRs were and still are 4:46 and 10:01 and I ran them several weeks apart when I was in about the same shape. For an endurance-type runner those are probably typical.
My freshman year of high school I ran 4:29 and 9:45. I would guess that 4:35ish would be a good place to be for most high school boys to have a shot at 9:59. I knew some very long distance oriented guys whose 3200m pace was barely slower than their 1600m pace though, so 4:40 or even 4:45 could be possible. I would say you'd really want to be sub 4:40 though.

Yeah, on LR, you can claim to be anything you want. If he's what he says he is, he would know runners can't PR at 4:52/10:00. Not a single poster on this thread have shared PRs with that type of ratio. For my Sophomore through Senior years, my PRs were 4;53/10:18. 4:38/9:43 and 4;30/9:28.
I posted a current HS runner's PRs above for you. Nico Young was a guy who cut less than 10 seconds off while doubling distance. You have more than a single example. I can post more for you but it is clear that you base your opinions on your own high school experience rather than accepting information from someone who has coached probably about 40 guys who have run sub 10. The most extreme that I can recall is 4:52 on my team.

I can see your frustration, but I think San Diego State University was trying to be realistic, which the OP may find more useful.
I think that all of our CC team broke 10 on the way to 3 miles, so I don't think sub-10 is a big deal, but maybe the OP is a soph or a junior lacking in a soph outdoor track season.
The slowest I’ve heard of is a 4:56/9:59 guy.
Most common slow double is 4:46(71)/9:59(74)
Most people improve their strength by training for sub 10 2 mile then also drop their 1600 times because strength was the missing ingredient.
Good luck!

It would be impossible for you to provide a single example, in the history of HS distance running, of a sub-4:05 guy that ran, based on your 8 second theory, 8:26 or better. How about even one that did less than 15 seconds? I guess your scenario only works for 10:00 guys.
Nico Young.
Wow all of you guys are way different than me. I ran 9:40 3200m then a few weeks later ran 4:19 for a 1500m which is roughly a 4:39. I think if you're much more aerobically inclined like me you could get away with 4:48 to 4:52

Not all PRs are created equal. Your example's mile might have been in a dual meet early in the season. Legit PRs of 4:56/9:59 are not possible.
In HS, training for the mile and 2-mile is pretty much the same thing. German Fernandez twice set PRs for both distances on the same night.

I had a teammate with PRs of 9:30 and 4:33. He was the absolute slowest guy over 200 I ever met who was still fast (honestly the kid could barely break 30) and even he had a 12-second spread between his 1600 and 3200.
Why do you get so angry at people who have no speed? They can't help it. Nico Young can probably run 4:04 and 7:45 right now. Should we be angry at him?
In looking at records from my high school 40 years on, the 3rd-10th fastest 1600 kids all have comparable 'fast' 3200 times. All these runners' 1600 times are stronger.
The top two 3200 times came during the 60s and 70s (!), and neither runner had a fast 1600. Outliers.

I would be seriously surprised in Nico can't break 4:00. What makes you think he's only capable of 4:04? At Arcadia, he outkicked 4:02 miler Cole Sprout.
