No.
I watched Flyn, Coghlan, Scott, and Walker at the Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont, IL. What an amazing event. Coghlan won with his patented last quarter sprint. It was on a board track; not fast. I was amazed and dazzled by the hype! I'd love to go back in time and see runners of that era compete again.
I was thinking of races that I would love to see, and Walker's 1500m win at the Olympic Games in 1972 would be up there in the top 5.
I remember seeing him break 3:50 the summer before my freshman year. THis record crushed the existing mile record.
Here is a link of him now-also shows the mile record:

Anyone know how what Walker's height and weight were? I always heard he was a big guy for a middle distance runner.
BTW, cool video clip. Thanks for sharing that.
Well you are four years to early there tinman. He won the 76 games. Still a meaty race to watch.
Oops, sorry. Brainfart.
Yes, 1976 Olympics.
I'm surprised nobody is aware that hair which is dark will be bleached by the sun as it gets longer. Therefore Walker has darker hair when it is short and blonde hair when it was longer.
Does anybody know when Walker won the 5th Avenue Mile, and who he had to beat to do it? I remember seeing a very short article saying that he'd won - maybe around 1987 or so?
It's a black and white photo...hence the black hair - he really has brown hair that gets lighter after months in the sun - the end.
when i think john walker, i think BADASS. the number one thing i remember about that guy was how TOUGH he was. 100% kiwi. there are not enough like him coming out of EnZed these days.
I was there in '76, had gotten tickets to the final day of track and boxing for my HS graduation.
became a walker fan that day, kept his poster up in my college dorm all 4 years
In '92 I got to sit and have a beer with him at the barcelona oly's. talk about a kick!
I met and interviewed John a few weeks ago in Auckland. He is a true gentleman and is VERY articulate. The man has an excellent knowledge of middle and long distance training, as you might expect. He appears to be holding up well with his Parkinson's. His hands seem the most affected. His mental faculties are clearly unaffected. He operates a saddlery south of Auckland selling every equestrian item you could ever want.
Favorite quote from the interview: "Running a fast mile has very little to do with speed, and everything to do with stamina."
His hair is light brown, with a splash of grey.
Link was unintentional, please ignore!
This has been one great thread! Thanks for
the video link!
did you move to Boise yet..?
"Who is John Walker?" ("And Michael Jazy?")
