The thing about Madonna is that she was eminently commercial, and knew how to assemble a team, in multimedia. I think William Orbit wrote and probably played and produced her whole Ray of Light album. She was smart enough to know that there were all sorts of people better than her, and she let them do their thing under her umbrella. Really, she was a brand, and an excellent one.
ADELE, still can’t stand her. The sound of her voice, especially her flat bleating, hurts my teeth. It is for me the psychological version of the fabled brown note. One time I excused myself from a dinner party because I felt like I was going to throw up. Another time, in a restaurant, I started howling like a dog just to get the sound of her voice out of my head. It brings me to tears, it is absolute torture, it hurts me physically.
The objectively true answer is Radiohead. The only rock and roll band that successfully and methodically eliminated any and all influence from African American or American rockabilly music. Great job guys. Nailed it. But...why?

"This band sucks because they lack African American or American rockabilly influence" is a rather bizarre standard, especially for a band that isn't American.
I have never liked The Dave Mathews Band. I don't know how they were ever a thing? Some people literally paid money to go to those concerts and as far as I know, they are still touring! I also can't name one of their songs.
I hate all forms of over-produced, autotune hip-hop vocals.

Okay, I refuse to look it up, but i think it was there song "Crash" or "Crash into Me" that was really pretty good. I tend to think of them as a one-hit wonder and can't take much else they did, either.
As someone said earlier, Radio Head - I hear a lot of people rave about them and I can't figure out what the appeal is, either.

All that is good and true in rock music no matter where it is played has come from blues and rockabilly/country. Get off those paths and you are doing the devil’s work. So saith Chuck Berry and Keith Richards. Well not really but they’d agree.

I think that would be like....most of rock music after the 70's my friend.
Tom Petty - I don't so much as hate as much as feel he was tremendously overrated and so close to actually being good.
He’s a man of his time but similar to Dolly Parton he wrote everything on the radio for about a decade. You would have heard a lot more good stuff from him as well but he fought the record company to get a fair deal. Finally, his stint on King of the Hill was great.
To summarize this thread, we are all tired of hearing the same artists from the 60's on played nonstop for the past 50 years.
I grew up in the 80's and Beatles were still played on the local rock station in the regular rotation. They are still played NOW! Nobody in the 80's was listening to music made in the 30's! Please move on!!
