Of course he would downplay his own age. First, if he says he is 19, but listed as 18, it already means he doesn't know himself about his own age.
Fact is, there was no birth certificate/record and everything is just guessing. Do you know how most babies in Africa are born? I'm sure Kipchoge doesn't remember anything from when he was 1 year old, or 3 years old, and in what year he was in.

You don't need to have a PhD in African studies to realize that this is not how a typical 18-year old African man looks like. Them not knowing their real age is still a problem these days, did you forget how many Africans smoked Ingebrigtsen in the U20 XC world's? He only got 12th. Almost every single Kenyan/Ethiopian runner in that race was ahead of him. One reason could be, they weren't "U20" at all.
