Is there one female guitarist who is a favorite? One?
Rory Block is a very good roots blue player. She's not in the pantheon but she's good.

Hey knucklehead, it’s about your FAVORITE guitarists, not necessarily the BEST guitarists.
Hey knucklehead, I'm aware. Prince should be everyone's favorite guitarist. He also happens to have been the best.

the problem with prince as a guitar player is that he rarely wrote guitar songs. So you don't hear him play much. Sure, a few times and it's great. The intro to When Doves Cry is amazing. The solo he did at the rock and roll hall of fame is legend. But he didn't write guitar music so it's slim pickings with him.
You just haven't heard him play enough then.

I listed Ann Wilson.
Thanks for the Lindsey Buckingham kudos.

That would be Nancy Wilson for me.
Others -- I'll just throw out two that I haven't seen mentioned yet -- Terry Kath, Mick Ronson.
Those of you who don't know who Kath was, watch this.

I listed Sue Foley, who I like very much. Also Gabriela from one of my bonus nods.
Evidently Prince thought very highly of Joni Mitchell’s playing, which didn’t come to my mind.
I've been known to miss the obvious, but am I right in that we've gotten THREE pages in and no one even remotely name dropped Tom Morello? No one?!?!
I know nothing about music. I just know the soundy-sounds I like to hear from the noise boxes. Maybe he's known as just an effects/pedals guy, but the guy is pretty famous as a guitarist, isn't her? You'd think some 80s/90s babies would show up and rave about him. I guess I'm that guy. Based on that, here's my crappy knowledge 5 (in no particular order:
Tom Morello
Jimi Hendrix
Jeff Beck
Prince
I need a 4th and there are so many people worthy of it (obviously) and I can't think of a trendy/hip choice, so I I'm going to go with a sharing the spot between Chuck Berry and Jimmy Page. Which is probably a cop out. But, that's just the kind of person I am.
Django Reinhardt, Norman Blake, Bert “ripped off by Jimmy Page” Jansch, Peter Blanchette, and Mwenda Jean Bosco.
Big Mamma Thornton, Bonny Raitt, Molly Tuttle.
1. David Gilmour
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Jimmy Page
4. Duane Allman
5. Keith Richards
6. Marc Ribot
7. Mick Ronson
8. Adrian Belew
9. Mark Knopfler
10. Steve Howe
No mention of JJ Cale or Mississippi John Hurt?

Nice catch. I actually know pretty much none of his work, but the stuff he's contributed to NIN has really impressed me.
nice tirade but i am quite sure i saw Tom Morello earlier. He's certainly noteworthy, but i happen to like Kim Thayil's guitar work better in that they both played with Chris Cornell, hence the comparison.
1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Eric Clapton
3. BB King
4. Jimmy Page
5. Chuck Berry
6. Keith Richards
7. Carlos Santana
8. Alvin Lee
9. Jeff Healey
10. John Frusciante
Not saying best. But my favorite.
Ugh I forget Glen Campbell. Glen bums John. Sorry John.

I really don’t believe anyone guitarist or musician being “the best.” There is so much variation to their styles and technical skills that there is no real point in ranking them. Here are my favorite guitarist, including favorite female guitarist:
1. Paul Gilbert
2. Marty Friedman
3. Guthrie Govan
4. Uli John Roth
5. Issei Noro
6. Allan Holdsworth
Female:
Jennifer Batten. Watch this and be mesmerised:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j3vWiGcsiu0For a female guitarist, it would have to be Poison Ivy of The Cramps. Thee's never been another like that.
Female: I had mentioned Ana Vidovic. She is a Croatian born classical guitarist. She has an absolute mastery of making difficult pieces look easy. But far beyond that, it is the emotion and passion in her playing that draws listeners in.
