In 12 years of coaching, I've had squads as high as 125 make it through the season. That's with an attendance policy, 3.5 coaches. We divided the team into event groups and had them come out at different times/days, with preference to our top groups. The largest sub-groups we had were about 20. We have a developmental group that meets less frequently and at less preferable times (school ends at 2, we would have them start warming-up at 3:30- after the A groups were finished). These guys competed at home meets only and we would fill 2 buses to away meets. Most are F/S and some do pan out quite nicely. A few years back one ran 55.23 400IH. Another broke 4:40 and 10:00. Never turn a kid away. You never know what a pre-pubescent 14 year-old can do if he buys in. We do lose kids, seems to more of a challenge to retain in the last 2-3 years.
