JTA - Are your 5k times not indicative of your fitness?
I know above you said that you favour the mile over other events. Last week I ran a 3 mile tempo at 6:54 avg, which is a bit faster than your most recent 5k time trial. As you know, I recently got 5:53 in my mile so I would play it more conservative than going for 5:30.
That being said, I am female and watching the mile results come in from our recent series has shown that a lot of the men in the club I run with have a pretty good mile, but can't sustain it for 5k or 10k. Also mine was on road (promenade as I live on a waterfront) and not track so that would probably play into it.
Quite a big difference between 5:30 and 5:50 IMHO. What's your PB?
My recent 5k TT from like three weeks ago wasn't indicative, in my opinion. I was under rested, under hydrated, and hadn't eaten much beforehand. So I kind of boned that one. But based on my heart rates from training, I'm better than that 5k I ran. I did a 3 mile tempo yesterday where my heart rate averaged 165. Plus I've only run like two 5000s before that one so I'm inexperienced to say the least.
My PR is from high school and a 5:29. The coach was an idiot and I never ran over the winter. So I left a lot of fitness on the table. However, when I set that I was about 135. So if I wasn't a fatso, I'd probably be in 5:1x shape or so. And there is a big difference, which I acknowledge. I'm just the type to reach for a faster goal and blowup than play it conservatively.
