So, yeah, Kipchoge got schooled by the Boston course today. Watching him, it seemed very clear that this was a case of a runner getting caught not realizing how tricky the course can be and paying the price for it. I still think he's the Goat, and if he runs it a second time, I think he runs much, much smarter.
Emma Bates: what can you say about her run? she wasn't going to break Obiri - hundreds of others have tried and failed. I don't think that he leading at that point was as much an issue as others did. I initially had the gut reaction of "tuck in! don't pace this for them." But i quickly realized: she was running her race and if any of others were huirting then she had a chance to put them away. I don't think that tucking in the pack at that point would have given her any more energy to try and stop them pulling away in the last mile. It actively might have hurt her in checking her natural rhythm. Every shot they showed looked ot me like a running having one of the best days of her life and putting all the cards on the table. Get in your rhythm and go as hard as you can for as long as you. Great, great race by her, and the sort of race we all run in our heads during training runs. When you have those days, you hope you win, but it doesn't always work out that way.
Not going to talk about Mantz and his lead pack running, thats for Ed to work on decision-wise. Can we talk about the degree of rotation on Mantz's legs in full stride? I'm really, really concerned by that and the amount of torque on his knees and hips. I said last week that i thought he expended too much energy to be a natural marathoner, and I'll add that I don't think he is quite blessed with the right biomechanics to be able to put in the 120 mile weeks needed to be a 2:06 marathoner. Perhaps short term, but long term? And once the injury cycle starts, its hard to get off of that. Yes, I know mantz has run a ton to get her and win those NCAA titles, but at the elite level, I really don't think that this is the best fit. It's just that the money is here, so they have to do.
