Yeah but we got to see Kipchoge motion to Patrick Sang and his PT guy that his quads were shot. Right before Patrick put his coat over him, you could see Kipchoge motion to him that from his waist down to his knee on his quads. Having run Boston 6 times, that tells me that he didn't put in the sustained, fast, downhill running that's required. Otherwise the first half crushes your quads.
Combined with the cold maybe. Everyone talks about the need to acclimatize for hot races, but if you aren't used to running in colder temperature it really sucks too (if there is a big change from what you are used to). This has to be worse for a very small guy with no body fat. Big temperature drops for me (running trails/hills) just destroy my quads.
Have we heard from EK or his team yet? We will need to wait until after the fall marathon to know if today is just the rare bad day, or the end of an era. I think he bounces back and still manages another major win….or two.
Obiri was amazing. Maybe Hassan will do the same in London next week. The track stars show their stuff on the roads.
Coverage SO BAD for the women’s race and top 20 finishes in both category. Split screen to David Ortiz? Gimme a break. Maybe we need two broadcasts- one dumbed down for the general public & one that actually covers THE RACE. Will they ever get it right?!
Not surprising. He has a lot of data now to know he is not capable of running with the lead pack. It's great that he has bet on himself but it's dumb to keep doing it. He needs guidance because he's making so many bad decisions and selling himself short. He should easily be a 2:08 guy if he's running 2:10 while completely tanking the second half
Prevailing wisdom would suggest CJ could improve his overall time by not going out so fast; however, he doesn't appear to be an idiot so perhaps it is what works best or him. I'll caveat by saying I am not an elite runner and my events are 5K and 10K but...My best performances and current PRs were all set while front running and going out faster and then losing some steam but holding it together enough to win the race and set a PR.
I've tried going out at a more even pace but whether it's mental toughness or motivation, I don't have as good results. It's quirky but I respond better when I see people gaining on me from behind than reeling them in, especially in the second half of races. More often than not I get caught and passed but those two ended up being faster races than my average.

This strategy can work in the 5K and 10K, but backfires badly in the Marathon.

The marathon is a different beast. And Albertson has ample evidence that his current strategy does not work for him. If you keep doing the same thing and getting the same sub-par result, then you need to try something different.

We have to stop thinking about this like running fans... most people tuning in are not running fans. I don't think the horrendous coverage we keep seeing is the right play for the general audience, but rest assured they don't give a cr@p about retaining running fans. I feel like the sport is so dead that at this point that coverage is just a tiny low-key project that no senior exec really focuses on for potential. They have a small budget to deploy and nobody cares about the viewership in the end - the needle isn't going to move.

The difference between going out fast and fading in a 5k/10k compared to the marathon is the difference between burning your finger on a grill and being roasted alive on a turning spit.

This coverage wasn't bad. They weren't showing a ton of special interest stuff, like NYC. So they missed Kipchoge fading, and it's not like Kipchoge even made an attempt to come back. There are contracts and they have to follow some sort of schedule. Sure they could use a "play while away" camera, but budgets are there too. If the event gets more popular to watch on tv then that stuff comes too. They did use more split screen and even three screens. If anything really interesting happened, like Schar's wheel getting loose and Kipchoge missing his bottle, and the lady falling, they showed it in replay.

Wagering in Massachusetts certainly would have made the Boston Marathon a more interesting event. Maybe next year,

That's exactly what happens in the UK with the London marathon. BBC1 for the sort of appalling coverage you saw today and BBC red button for purely coverage of the elite races.
Thought 1:02:19 was a super fast 1st half in this. Chebet has run 2:03-flat in Valencia. Course definitely running slow (2:00-3:00?). This is as good as any performance ever @ Boston. Dismantled a world class field.
Called Fauble. He knows his limits & knows this course. Just ran out of real estate to catch Kipchoge. Smart to go out in 1:03:59.
Today a good day for the Boston/NYC is for racing crowd. The "slow" times here aren't slow. They're worth something faster. Lesson for amateur runners is to get in 2:00-3:00 better shape if you want to chase a goal time at Boston. If you wanted to run 3-flat today, 3:02-3:03 was probably right. Probably a good chunk of folks out in 1:29-1:30 & finishing in 3:05+. Love how this course rewards patience/strategy/good decision making. What a fun day/race.
On a hobby jogger level, I was in 3:13 shape when I ran 3:26 in Boston. The downhill took its toll on me and my quads were toast when I got to Heartbreak Hill.
Feel bad for Kipchoge. I paid 72 dollars to watch him win. He missed that water bottle, that's when I knew he was in trouble. He may have another shot at it, but ti.e is running out. Next year for sure. Happt with Emma bates, needs to work on those last miles but she kept it close. Very happy. That girl can run.
