Running is the easy part. He can run hard for two hours, but says what he does in the other 22 may be more important.
Also, that high school mentality -- wanting to be a miler, not a marathoner -- has played a role. He evolved from the 5K to the 10K to the half-marathon to the marathon.
"I was never the high-mileage guy," he says. His body was spared a bit, relative to his age.
Plus he knows his body completely. He'll often change his workout plans during a day based on how he feels.
Former UCLA coach Bob Larsen, who recruited Keflezighi and has been his coach or mentor since that freshman season of 1994, says he's been able to be elite for so long because of his intelligent approach and work ethic.
"He's been very good at doing the more boring parts of training and taking care of himself," says Larsen, who encouraged such runners as Keflezighi and American women's marathon record-holder Deena Kastor to work with him at altitude in Mammoth after he retired from UCLA in 1999.
"Great distance runners like to go out and run. Very seldom have I known a runner that didn't want to put the miles in. But very few guys want to do the stretching, do the ancillary work that helps them get to the top level, stay at the top level for a long period of time."
Whether it's his diet, warm-ups, cooldowns, cross-training work or injury recovery, Larsen says Keflezighi takes every aspect seriously."

I'm a total hobby jogger and can't relate to an elite in any way, but I wonder if there's something to this. I 've found that quitting can become a habit, and I wonder if that's where he is. Feel bad early on? Just drop out, no big deal.
I think quitting can become a habit, and I think Ryan is very badly suffering from it.
There's a phrase that goes, "Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern." Ryan has clearly let the thought of quitting become acceptable with him. His habit of quitting is no accident or coincidence, it's a pattern and it's a problem.
He's become weak, physically and mentally. Like I said before, if he feels discomfort even if it isn't an injury, he finds it okay to pull out. He needs to dig deeper than that, grow a pair so-to-say. Tough it out and take the loss. The best career change he can make is to swallow his pride. He needs to go with the scrubs and start killing low-level races, build himself up no matter what the time is, and then he can return to the elite stage. He needs to eliminate the thought of quitting from his mind and realize a DNF because he misjudged his pace or he isn't feeling good is far worse than a 2:20.
I hear a lot of runners say after a race "It was a blessing just to run today." For somebody as religious as he is, I'm surprised Ryan doesn't think that, judging by how he takes all of his starts for granted and refuses to stick them out.

As another commenter said, the first two miles each drop 100' in elevation. I don't think his initial pace was as aggressive as people here are assuming.
(And then the course gets twisty and hilly through downtown, where the buildings block GPS.)

So, I turned on the feed (KTLA) late... about a minute before Ryan dropped out. Please someone correct me if I am wrong but I am 99% sure that Ryan dropped out shortly after being passed by the lead WOMENS pack which included his wife at that point. Ouch! Bad day for the Halls.

Any time you leave it all on the course, it hurts. Racing hurts.
But thats why you toe the line. Right?? Have I been doing it wrong?
Hall seems to stop anytime he hurts. Does he ever push through a bad workout?
Where he is at now I really think his next marathon should be a controlled effort and try to run in the 2:12-2:13 range with even pacing. If he cannot do this then there are underlying problems that we do not know about. Forget about trying to run really fast or to win for now, just get a solid effort under his belt, then build up and go from there. The first few miles today was a suicidal pace considering the heat and also considering that he has not run anything fast for 5000-10000m for quite some time. I really do not understand that philosophy it does not make sense. I wish him the best but things are looking grim for him right now.
As an ambassador of the race, he didn't represent. that's the disappointing part. about 20,000 others beat him by finishing. good for them for beating an elite.

And?....Did you watch the KTLA feed or not? Hall dropped out around mile 14. According to this story....

This is what I think I saw happen but since I turned the feed on just before Ryan dropped out I am not sure (... I could be mistaken and they could have been cutting back and forth between the men's and women's leaders). Did anyone actually watch the feed, can anyone confirm what happened? Did Sara pass Ryan right before he dropped out?
What time do you guys think he would have finished in? He went through the half in about 66' and was already slowing down a lot by that point. Sub 2:20???
