Watching Hedengren run I am of the view she has certain limitations. She uses a lot of energy-expensive upper body movement when she runs - she looked to be working very hard next to the smaller Lemngole - almost labouring, and not gliding as the very best distance runners seem to do. She also appears to have only one cadence when she runs, which is determined by her extremely long legs. She probably expends quite a lot of energy, that is only enabled, I am guessing, by her exceptional aerobic capacity. She is undoubtedly a top athlete at collegiate level but none of the runners that I saw in that race - other than Lemngole - showed the form of a potential international athlete. I would be very surprised if Hedengren transitions to track at a world class level. She doesn't appear built for it or to run like the very best do.
Jane is definitely at a disadvantage in cross country (hills, mud etc) in terms of body size + the pro/world elite level strength that the much older Lemngole has. It was especially obvious in the last km from 5-6km. I was thinking for those reasons she’d be much more comparable and is more likely to be competitive with Lemngole on the track (especially in shorter 3-5k distances)…no hills, no mud and it’s shorter. Not sure what Lemngole’s mile is, but Jane’s got excellent speed - 4.23 I think? I guess we’ll see soon at BU Indoor, assuming they line up together? Very much looking forward to it!
We can also never know how much an athlete may improve from a given age but it is notable that another great college athlete improved little from age 19, when he set wrs, and that was Ryun. If Hedengren is already physically mature, which she could be at her height, she may not necessarily run much faster.
Jane was 18, several other girls on the podium in the elite races were 14 years old! When Jane is 23, it will be highly unlikely she will develop a kick regardless so she may not make a ton of improvement. She is a metronome runner.
Spent a little too much previous week and was clearly pressing and bothered by someone still with her at halfway....mentally seemed like she completely broke at the end.
do you race? she got out sprinted by a professional runner.
For whatever reason I thought she would crush everyone or at least put up a fight until the very end.
So I'm struggling with 1) she isn't as good as I made her out to be 2) had an off day 3) Doris Lemngole is just better.
or is this too simplistic. Maybe she's not used to running under pressure with others near her?
Really?? Did you see her time? She ran a terrific race!
Yea, she ran fast and ran with patience which was the only shot she had. Even let someone else lead. She did great. Being a Fr and against a semi pro with that last hill coming up, we all knew it would be tough.
There's one thing people are forgetting. Doris dressed for the cold weather conditions and Jane did not. Doris wore arm sleeves and gloves. Jane did not having anything keeping her arms and hands warm.
Dressing for the cold is very important. If your body has to work hard on keeping its arms and hands warm, it can't put all of its energies into the race. It's too taxing for the body to both keep itself warm and run at maximum capacity. It's a drain on the system.

Either she was not bothered by the cold or she wasn't bright enough to prepare for it. Which?

It wasn’t freezing and vast majority of the runners in the race weren’t wearing sleeves and gloves. Rocky Hansen ran the race of his life and wore neither. He certainly didn’t suffer a drain on his system.

Both winners wore arm sleeves. Compare how comfortable Samuel looked at the end with how ragged Hansen looked.

That’s funny. Samuel has run 26:51 and he was one of the few runners that didn’t look ragged after a balls to the wall, XC 10K.

Neither. Inexperience.
That's about as dumb as putting on the wrong kind of shoes. Most unlikely. You're assuming the cold affected her adversely Did she say so? Sounds like you've come up with an excuse. She hasn't.

Dumber is you thinking there were only two explanations for what I wrote.
Dumbest is taking everything you read on this board seriously.
Has it already been mentioned that Doris ran a 14:40 road 5k in Lille 2 years ago? She's going to be a handful for everyone in the NCAA for the next 2 years!

That result is a bit of an outlier, prior to her Freshman year. A year later, she ran 15:04 and 15:17 indoor, and 15:25 outdoor. Her 3K results in 2024 were 8:53, 9:06, 8:50. Was she doped up for the 14:40?
I guess we should have all put aside xc results and simply compared Doris's sub 9 steeple PR to Jane's 2 mile pr of 9:17.
Doris's time is superior. Projected out to 6km the XC results make a lot of sense. This turned out to be the easiest way to predict what we all just saw.

You certainly aren't worth taking seriously.
Either the conditions didn't affect her or she failed to adequately prepare for them. (She hasn't said so). So what other explanation is being offered?

hahahahaha you're still taking my comment seriously. Joke's on you!!!
