So is it when the Africans put the hammer down at the end that best Westerners cannot respond? Bates' incredible race reminds me Cam Levins' at Tokyo. That extra half gear at the end they come up short. So near but so far away.
why are they having some random guy tell the second place runner to go the other way, easily could impact the race, at a major marathon why not just have a big open finish line?
Because the average track and field or road race official is a Clueless buffoon.
A bunch of jokers waving flags and pointing in a very vague manner
Bates 5th, 2:22, about 8 minutes off the women's WR
Fauble 7th, 2:09, about 8 minutes off the men's WR.
But Bates was in the mix until < 2 miles to go.
Yeah I get that, but the races played out differently, and while Bates/Hall/D'Amato/Seidel are solid, it's just not significantly better than our men, even not counting Rupp, who is probably still the best American marathoner male or female when healthy.
Just slight differences. Not leaps and bounds better like the original poster suggested. Much more fun to watch the last couple years, though. They have mixed it up more.
my gawd what awful coverage on ESPN. Top american finishing in a tight race and they switch to Kipchoge walking, putting on his jacket. then the banner declares him the overall winner. whatta joke, get split screen.
Yeah but we got to see Kipchoge motion to Patrick Sang and his PT guy that his quads were shot. Right before Patrick put his coat over him, you could see Kipchoge motion to him that from his waist down to his knee on his quads. Having run Boston 6 times, that tells me that he didn't put in the sustained, fast, downhill running that's required. Otherwise the first half crushes your quads.
