My take on Boston is that the downhill first ten miles sucks you into running too fast early and you pay for it later. My second fastest ten mile time was at Boston -- a frightening prospect with sixteen miles to go.
It's not eligible for any records no matter what. And if you've ever been to Chicago you know how the wind is there.
I've run Chicago once and Boston 5 times. Boston is not easy at all. I'm not saying it should count as a record but like I said, the times are more comparable than you think other than maybe the tailwind today. There's a reason why Boston has much slower times on average than flat courses.
I have also run Chicago once and Boston 5 times. My four slowest road marathons out of 30 were all at boston. The first 5k are all downhill and can kill your quads and tempt you to go out waaaay too fast. And much overlooked is the fact that there is practically no shade on the course. Combined with the late start and time of year, it can fry you in any temperature. The overcast today during the second half of the race was huge.
Chicago in 2012 was perfect, cool, overcast and no wind with a fast course.

Talbi (2:03:45) and Hicks (2:04:35) both go sub-Mantz (2:04:43). This is clearly the strongest top 3 American marathoners we’ve ever had.
This is why point to point courses don't count towards records. You get a tailwind and everyone runs a huge PR. Hicks and Klecker were a full five minutes faster than what they ran at NYC. Ford nearly four minutes faster than Chicago (where Mantz ran the 2:04:43). It was just that kind of day.

Here is what I want to see for coverage in any major road race:
- lead Men
- lead Women
- lead American Men - lead American Women
Show it split screen - you can comment on anything - just keep it split screen entire race. If there is an interesting 'other' story for American men (e.g. Rupp running 2:08 at 39) then OK to cut back in "American Men" screen to that
Crazy how much more competitive the men's vs women's race. Only 8 minutes separated the top 30 men vs 17 minute separation for top 30 women. Also women's winner way off WR vs men's winner - you'd think that would result in a tighter women's field.

Maybe the US will one day challenge Japan's outstanding marathon day when 42 Japanese men finished under 2:10 at the 2021 Lake Biwa Marathon. That race was unique because it had ideal conditions, a concentration of all the top Japanese runners in one race because of the pandemic, and it was the last ever Lake Biwa marathon. Lake Biwa was also a record-eligible course.
Should be a fun (and potentially fast one). Temps ideal for running fast. Slight breeze at their back. If you are out on the course, look for me on the lead men's vehicle. I'll be easy to spot as I'll be bundled up wearing the famed yellow letsrun beanie .
