‘Like Science Fiction’: Teen phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus runs 1:42.70, takes down 800m field in Stockholm
Lutkenhaus' remained undefeated as a pro as he took down 2023 world champ Marco Arop in his Diamond League debut
By Robert Johnson and Jonathan GaultCooper Lutkenhaus’s remarkable first season as a professional athlete continued on Sunday at the Stockholm Diamond League as the 17-year-old ran 1:42.70 to defeat Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop of Canada and remain undefeated at 800m in 2026. His time was the fastest by anyone in the world this year outdoors, and trails only Josh Hoey’s indoor world record of 1:42.50 in January for the fastest time overall.
As if the win and the time were not impressive enough, Stockholm was Lutkenhaus’s first-ever race on the Diamond League, track & field’s top professional circuit. Some of America’s top athletes of the 2010s and 2020s, such as Galen Rupp, Matthew Centrowitz, and Cole Hocker, have never won a Diamond League points race. Lutkenhaus did that in his Diamond League debut.
Lutkenhaus, who just finished his junior year at Northwest High School (Justin, Tex.) two weeks ago, has now won all five of his 800m finals this year and has passed every test. He won the US indoor title in March, then became the youngest world champion in any event by winning World Indoor gold in Poland.
As great as that win in Torun was, Lutkenhaus’s win on Sunday may have been even more impressive. The World Indoor final did not feature Arop, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, or Djamel Sedjati, the three men who have dominated the 800 on the global level in recent years, sweeping the Olympic and World Championship podiums in 2024 and 2025. Wanyonyi was meant to race in Stockholm but scratched after becoming a father earlier this week. But Arop, the 2023 world champion and 4th-fastest man in history (1:41.20 pb) was here, yet proved no match for Lutkenhaus.
On the international TV broadcast, commentator Tim Hutchings summed things up nicely, “17 years old. 1:42. It’s like science fiction. It’s quite astonishing.”
Lutkenhaus ran with a lot of composure. Mid-pack early in
the race (6th at 300 in 38.4), he didn’t panic and slowly moved up on the outside. 4th at the bell (50.9), he tracked Arop from behind, passing 600 in 1:16.5 before pulling into the lead in the final 50.
