What other hilly marathon has he won? The downhills are as rough as the uphills. I don’t care how much hill training one does it’s a difference monster. He’s been running track marathons. Boston is an XC marathon. Different monster that that he will need to learn from in order to be successful.
This is as bad as the usual take that hot weather is better for the Kenyans because they are from Africa. Spring time in Iten is very wet, so much so that the roads can get so muddy that training becomes very difficult. Today's conditions were about like any morning run in Iten in the spring.
Kipchoge is human. He has made a career out of flat, fast marathons. He found out today that hills are really hard, especially when you are in one of the most competitive Boston fields in quite some time. This is the beginning of the end for Kipchoge. There are only so many times an athlete can crank out a fast marathon before father time has his way with you. But credit to Kipchoge for taking on the challenge. When Geb took on NY (his only hilly course), he was a DNF.
Yes, once he dropped off the lead pack it would have been easy for EK to have walked off, but he gutted it out and finished. He deserves a lot of credit for racing to the end, giving the fans a chance to see him, even when he must of felt horrible.
Kipchoge was in awe of Connor Mantz and was keying off of him the entire race. This disrupted his rhythm which caused him to not perform at his optimal level.
All I ve seen today is Eliud be a pacemaker for the all group . Too long ahead in the wind alone at a pace of about 2'57 - 2'58" /km . Chebet and Kipruto were well protected in the pack during the most difficult partsof the race . I dont want to say that this is the reason why Eliud lost the race but sure he spent a lot. I mean it was not a good thing to see Eliud always in front at that fast pace. He could have done this if he had been around 2:12 2:13 runners but not this behavior with 2:03 , 2:04 runners around him well protected in the group behind him .It 's strange because from all the sub 2 study we know the importance(talking about consumption) to stay well protected in a pack of runners ,so Eliud should know.

Good point. All told, this was the most competitive marathon Kipchoge has ever run. Fail.
Boston in the spring is not comparable to Iten in the spring in any way shape or form. Why don't they host high profile marathons somewhere in Africa for once and give the top marathon runners an actual chance at running in the conditions that their body has been adjusted to throughout their whole life. They host them in western cities that could not be further from the conditions Kipchoge & co are biologically accustomed to. Host it at sea level in Africa and Kipchoge will run faster than his current record.
Ran the race today: conditions really weren’t as bad as they’ve might have looked on tv. Athletes who were struggling today really should have a look at other things first before blaming external factors.

assclown has to make a "Kipchoge goes home devasted" thread? The man has nothing to prove to you or anyone else. He doesn't have to run course records or 2 hours everytime he runs. He broke 2 hours! #micdrop
Anyone saying he broke 2hrs loses all credibility.

The vaccine didn’t affect him when he won the Olympics in 2021 or set the world record in 2022. But now it has devastated his body. Just like the air pollution that affected only him.
He ran a great 2:09:23 for 6th place. Five runners managed to beat him today. The Olympic Gold Medalist has nothing to prove. Just wasn't his day.
I think he used too much energy in the first half of the race, not so much pace wise but breaking the wind, so the 62:15 time might have been a 61:30 effort.
From what I read a few weeks ago his training was not specific to the course. People seemed to blow that info off thinking that he knew what he was doing. I picked Chebet for the win after reading that.
I have run Boston before a few times and remember my bad day there. The early downhills feel great. The Newton Hills were no big deal. The downhills in the last few miles felt like grim death all because of the early miles beat me up. I just did not know it yet. The only time I felt good in the final miles was going up the hill by the Citgo sign.
On a side note I watched Mantz going HARD early on. His effort looked like he was in a 5k. I was actually extremely impressed he was still hanging in there at 30k. He's a tough guy and only going to get better with experience.
Kipchoge had a bad day. It happens. The signs were there-removing the headband and the gloves before the 30K mark (while the conditions were getting worse), then asking others to lead, then missing the bottle...
It happens. I'm OK with that. I'm not OK when someone is clearly not 100% prepared for a race and throws excuses (like the "blocked ear" in London). Today, Kipchoge lost to runners who were better prepared for the event. Let's hope this time it doesn't turn into a debate about the missed water bottle.
I assume that he was very well-prepared but could've run the race differently, like not leading the pack and letting others draft off him, not pushing so hard in the first half of the course, etc. Yes, Boston is a tricky course. He isn't the first, nor will he be the last, to not get it right the first time. As for his blocked ear in London, who the heck are you to judge what he was dealing with?
It's Patriots Day, a state holiday in Massachusetts (and in Maine, which used to be the same state as Massachusetts). The Boston Marathon is always held on Patriots Day, which is always a Monday. So lots of people in Massachusetts have the day off, and many choose to watch the race.
And used to always start at noon, but they fixed that for obvious reasons.
