I'd say the whole situation shows integrity and sportsmanship - the fact that these two heroes were selfless enough to save a fellow runner, and the fact that Mr. Ofsevit himself had helped out a runner several weeks ago at another race. He certainly doesn't deserve to be labelled a "cheat".

While it's really up to the BAA how to handle this, it's important to remember that they allow in thousands of charity and invited runners who do not meet the qualifying time standards. So the fact is that they make plenty of exceptions for people to run Boston. Again, it's not as if this is the Olympics or the Olympic Trials or that we're talking about an elite athlete here.

Not sure if you ran Boston this year, but I did and finished just ahead of Mr. Ofsevit. Yes, I struggled in the heat, had my quads cramp badly and was forced to walk/jog. But I wouldn't feel insulted if Mr. Ofsevit were to have his time remain official. "Giving him a finishing time" doesn't diminish my accomplishment at all. In fact, everyone who found out I ran the race congratulated me.

There are multiple cheating opportunities (and documented attempts) in road and trail races.

The 'rules' in these events tend to be gray.

Almost impossible to cheat in a track race, unless its with mostly invisible PEDs

i think i agree with you. the question we all need to ask ourselves is something like this:"If three Ethiopian (or similar) marathon runners were crushing their competition in the Olympic marathon (ahead by say, 2-3 minutes) and one of them passed out near the finish and was carried across the line by his two countrymen, would he be disqualified or would he win an olympic medal?"If not disqualified, would he be deserving of whatever place medal (think GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE) he cross at relative to the other dudes? It doesn't matter if he's 20,000th place or 3rd place, it's the principle. That's what the OP is sayingWhat do you think?

Sam, you may be getting trolled on this one. I suspected this was just another Boston is for hobby-joggers provocateur.

One thing I would say is that over the years, there are these folks that drop just at the finish, that I have wondered if they are after some TV time. As far as this guy goes, give him a number, it wasn't for a gold medal. Who knows if he would've crawled in to re-qualify?
