Well, there are many on this thread commenting that Gidey will continue to under perform in global championships because of a relative lack of closing speed (though she did close pretty fast last year in the 10 at worlds). Well, yesterday it wasn’t her closing speed that did her in. It’s true you can’t close fast if you are totally gassed at the end, but yesterday she mistimed her effort, went totally lactic and died over the last 600, collapsing 30 meters from the finish. This is not the same thing as having Chebet simply out kick her in the last 400-600.

Correct, Gidey in Bathurst pulled a Cheptegei in Kampala.

It’s amazing that athletes with the racing and training experience of Gidey and Cheptegei can have this happen to them. You’d think they would have a super refined sense of their red line and how to avoid crossing it. I remember after Do Nascimento went to ground in NY there was a thread, “baller or idiot” and the consensus was “idiot.” Maybe that’s because he was 5 miles from the finish and not 30 meters.
I remember Gidey puking at the side of the HM course after setting the WR. Some people can just really push it until the legs give up… high pain tolerance (which is necessary to become a great distance runner). Though I’ve never seen Kipchoge in that state

That "super refined sense of their red line" is easier to cross in hot weather with a lumpy finish like that one.
Looked like she was waltzing in for the win. Then Chebet was closing like a freight train.
Gidey goes down and then her private coach runs out there and picks her up?
Never seen anything like that.
Has to be DQ right?
She wasn’t leading when she went down. She had already been passed.
When you say meters from the finish, I’m picturing 2-3 meters but it was 20-30 meters. Technically, the start of any race is meters from the finish, I guess.
Of course it’s a DQ. You’ve followed the sport long enough to know this. I don’t know what those coaches were thinking.

She was obviously exhausted but it looked more like she lost balance than getting seized up like Cheptegei back then.
Would like to see what she had to say about the end in a post-race interview. It’s not clear to me she mistimed the end either because she knew her kick was her liability, so if she didn’t start early, Chebet would get her anyway.
