I think it wouldn't be crazy to tell her to go to the front - jenny simpson and emma coburn's frontruning have been revelatory this year - the way to beat the africans is to go to the front and have the step on them rather than let them have the step on you.
No, Cain is not going to run 3:58 and win...but I'm thinking getting out front would teach her more than sitting in the back, getting spiked and pushed around and boxed in until the last 300.
You are actually going to have Cain trying to stay in front of Aregawi and Hasan, with a PR 10 seconds slower than them? Seriously?
It is one thing if you're Simpson, with this year's best time faster than Aregawi and almost as fast as Hasan to go to the front--and I suspect she will be running for Slaney's AR and will get it--but for Mary to do that would be suicide.
There will be a range of athletes in the race. Mary needs to hang with as fast of a pace as she can handle and get used to kicking off a faster pace. But it needs to be a pace she can handle, and not die form.
well it ain't 10 seconds - more like 8. And I qualified by saying 'it wouldn't be crazy' and that she wouldn't win a fast race.
but don't you see some value in frontrunning rather than doing the same old run in the pack for 1200 meters, find your way out of the pack for 100 meters than kick the last 200?
who would have thought coburn could frontrun and win a diamond league race? nobody.
