Another encouraging performance. Even allowing for great conditions, just look at being 3-4 minutes behind the top 3 who are 2:02-3 guys. We’ll see where Klecker goes next but I think he’s now in the 2:07 fitness on a flat, loop course and improving.
Berlin marathon in September? He could run 2:04-2:05 there
Boston with a tailwind is likely faster than Berlin. If he just runs a 2:06 on a record eligible course that would be big. He ran roughly 2:10 flat in New York (tougher course) probably worth 2:08 on a Berlin type course... This year's 2:05:56 at a Berlin type course is probably a high 2:06 or low 2:07. So a decent improvement but not quite what it looks like from his two marathons being 4 minutes apart. Hicks was right in front of him at New York and about a minute ahead of him yesterday, so they both were about 3-4 minutes faster at Boston compared to their runs at New York.

I agree I think Klecker improved on his NYC performance somewhere in the 1:30-2:00 range. But in 5 months that’s excellent. Obviously the faster you want to go the harder it gets. The encouraging thing is it sounds like the race only felt like a B day for him. While Klecker is younger, I think contrasting him to some of the other guys who ran sub-13 and went roads (eg Marc Scott, Chelimo) you have to be encouraged the arrow is pointing up after a ragged start.

But of course, as you know, a 2 minute improvement “in 5 months” may be a tad bit misleading, as let us way I raced my first mile in 4:40, by running 72, 72, 72 and 64, and one week later I ran 4:36 by running 69, 70, 70, and 67, one wouldn’t necessarily say wow you improved your mile by 4 seconds in a week. Maybe I had learned something the first time, and maybe Joe did too in the marathon. So that may be a big part of it, although that could theoretically continue also.
