I was actually really surprised with Colin. 16th in the nation and the 3rd best American at a 10k distance is really impressive for an 800/1500 guy. Also NAU team both men and women ran really well especially with the limited roster on the women’s side. I feel like next year they both are a transfer or two away from once again being in the thick of things. They have tons of talent coming back.

Could it be any better than this?

he improved a lot from high school (4:18 hs jr to 4:01 as true soph) but in his 1 yr brosnan got him down 7 seconds while washington has continued to help him improve, it's hard to say a 7 second improvement at that level in 1 year reflects poorly on brosnan

Lomong was 3rd at Nats in 2007 and ran 1:45 the following spring. 1:44 a few seasons later. Brannen, fwiw, was a 1:46 guy his whole career.

He was about 18 seconds behind the winner, Habtom Samuel. If we think Samuel is capable of running sub 13 and sub 27, this implies that Sahlman is in 13:10/27:20 shape right now. Given his raw speed, I think a 13:05 is not out of the question.

In a year or two he might be one of the best 5K runners in the country, along with Cole Hocker, Rocky Hansen, Parker Wolfe, Ethan Strand and Sahlman's former teammate Nico Young. Sahlman will be particularly dangerous in a slowish championship race such as the USA Olympic Trials.

Who cares about 5k? Him in a 1500 is the real threat right now. At this rate I wouldn't be shocked to see him run 3:29 next summer.

Is this a joke? The race was not a time trial. It was a race. Samuel waited until late (maybe a mile left) to make his move, and he put some real estate between himself and the others in a hurry, so one cannot say that Sahlman would be anywhere close to Samuel in a 10000m time trial, and of course he doesn't have to be.

Yea his real peak could coincide with 2028, would be so cool if he made the team. He's definitely going to have an age advantage vs. Hocker, Fisher, and Nuguse, as their raw speed will dwindle more as time goes on, especially for somebody like Fisher. I would say Birnbaum and Martin have this advantage as well.

I know Blanks 5k PR is fast as hell, but I don't like his chances in a last lap kick vs. these guys in a last lap 5k. Feel like him and Nico will focus on the 10k more, I've heard the stats on making both 5k and 10k world teams are not good (especially at the trials). Feels like the 5k event in America is gonna be a speedy affair with all these miler types who can run fast 5k's.

If NAU had a 5th that could have run 70th place or so they would have been a podium team (4th). Too bad that that neither Engel or Baloga ran this year, as both have been all Americans in the past (XC for Engel and steeple for Baloga)

Engel was listed on the entry sheet, Baloga was not. I’m surprised none of the media blogs interviewed Cornfield about their absence. I would be interested in his take on how the first year as head coach played out.

Although I did forget that Lopez Lomong had sick range in college too. Sahlman is following along in both their footsteps. Can Colin be competitive in 3K/5K like Lomong?
