No. Wet grass. Not soggy. Just a few muddy spots on the inside of the course where a few guys went down, no women.
I, like others, thought Doris & Jane would reach 18:30, maybe as low as 18:15.
Doris did. Jane didn't, mostly because the opening 2:59.6 k led to a closing 3:14 k.
Plus, Diljeet told Rojo post-race, Jane mentioned her legs were feeling a bit tired. Maybe they got her peak wrong by a few days. Who knows.
But Jane "only" running 3 seconds faster than Pre-Nats was not due to a mushy course.
Almost everyone else in the field ran 6k xc prs, many huge prs including Lemngole.
Jane's teammate Chamberlain ran the race of her life, taking 4th in 18:47, 21 secs faster than Pre-Nats. Teammate Nelah Roberts was 27 secs faster today. Just two easy examples to look up.
Maybe if Jane had opened a few secs slower she could have closed much faster to finish around 18:30. She just ran out of gas.
Regardless of what different tactics or pre-race prep Hendengren could turn to on a do-over, no was was beating Lemngole today.
It may take until 7-8 years from now when NCAAs will likely return to Gans Creek before we ever see anyone come close to the 18:25 Lemngole ran today.
Doris is 23, half of the BYU team is older than her. Obviously thats a joke and not a fact. But this BS needs to stop.
Jane ran amazing, Doris ran amazing, and that was one hell of a race. I’m just glad women’s running is getting attention but enough is enough with the racist remarks and attacks.

For whatever reason I thought she would crush everyone or at least put up a fight until the very end.
So I'm struggling with 1) she isn't as good as I made her out to be 2) had an off day 3) Doris Lemngole is just better.
or is this too simplistic. Maybe she's not used to running under pressure with others near her?
I think it’s pretty obvious Hedengren didn’t have her best day, and her tired legs are probably mostly because she ran too hard at regionals. But, no matter, Lemngole, who others have correctly pointed out, is world class and nobody was beating her today. Plus, Hedengren is still a true frosh on the biggest stage with much pressure on her. Great race all things considered and she will be fine.
Imagine this was your daughter. She's an insane talent and just proved it once again. For anyone who wasn't an actual top class runner, you may not understand that a historic race is not in your legs 100% of the time. Some days you show up, full of motivation, but legs are flat and you do the very best you can. You don't miss "peaking" by a couple days. That's hilarious. If you re-run this race 10 times, Jane might win 3 or 4 of them. Some of this is chance. Unless you have reached the summit yourself, please avoid saying incorrect things with the utmost confidence. Be happy for her. Be excited for the future. Respect the positive outlook she has. And most of all, be thankful that she has someone to push her...otherwise she'd likely not reach the same heights.
To "analyze" Jane's race, look at her kilo splits (rounded to nearest second):
3:00, 3:08, 3:07, 3:07, 3:04, 3:14.
9:14 then 9:25.
At Pre-Nats, Jane's splits were:
3:08, 3:10, 3:04, 3:13, 3:01, 3:06.
9:22 then 9:20.
So, very simple analysis. Way too fast an opening k lead to a way too slow final k. Although, have to admit as an observer, seeing all those women go thru 1k in 3-flat or so was thrilling to watch.
If Jane had opened today in a 3:08 she would have been buried back in 90th place. Even if she would have done that today then finish with another 3:06, Jane still would have been no match for Doris who closed in 3:01 -- the fastest final k of the field so far as I can tell after a quick scan of the results.
I think Lemngole is to college distance running what Chebet is to professional distance running. Both have the best fitness with the best kick.
We just will have to wait for Doris to graduate or turn pro for someone else to have a chance to win NCAA XC, NCAA Indoor 5k and NCAA Steeplechase.
I actually think she needed to have got out that hard to stand a chance. And probably needs to that again in the future, unless her kick significantly improves.
Running hard from the gun is the only chance she has to keep those with more speed at bay.

Well if this fictional movie showed two female Mormon/LDS missionaries, then it must mean that most Mormon women go on missions, including the BYU cross country runners.
Jane was 18, several other girls on the podium in the elite races were 14 years old! When Jane is 23, it will be highly unlikely she will develop a kick regardless so she may not make a ton of improvement. She is a metronome runner.
