She took up cycling due to running injuries.

It appears she ran a lot growing up but soccer was her sport prior to cycling. It sounds as if she dealt with depression. She had a bright future but depression can literally be a killer. RIP Kelly.
Damn...
Awful news.
It appears she was also a talented writer on top of everything else, and wrote this article for Velo News less than a month ago.
Yeah she discusses in that article how the challenge of her schedule was like juggling knives. She was having a hard time but such a sad ending.

I had a hard time reading her article. Clearly it was a cry for help. So sad, yet at the same time, she finally found her peace.

It is very sad. But I would hesitate to console ourselves with the thought that her death brought her peace. It is too comfortable a notion to fit with the self-destruction that is suicide.
A twist in the story is that apparently she suffered a bad concussion in a crash a few weeks before and was not herself after that. Not only is this extremely sad, but downright scary.

One reason why runners shouldn't cross train with cycling or downhill skiing, but rather with swimming and in the gym. Injury risk is MUCH lower.
The only (non-overuse) risks with running are tripping on trails, and being bitten by dogs with bad owners. These too can be career-ending tho, if you fall unlucky at high speed (or downhill) or if it's a strong dog, like rottweiler, pit bull, shepherd etc..
The depression issue was way more a factor than the pressure of combining school and athletics.
She had the time to memorize 35 pages of music in her spare time. If you can't shut your brain off then everything gets blown out of proportion.

Indeed. While the constant irritation and frustrations of life may certainly be gone, so is life itself. With likely nothing on the other side.
Tribute from a friend.
It is really disturbing when something tragic like this happens. Someone blessed with both Olympic-caliber athletic ability, as well as Stanford-caliber intellectual ability, gets to the perspective that life isn't worth living. Hard to comprehend.
Kelly reportedly had attempted suicide in January and had received some mental health treatment. Her father said after the December concussion that she was feeling apathetic about cycling and she had headaches and vision issues. Perhaps if she had not had the concussion she would be alive today. She died by asphyxiation.
Very very sad. Post-concussion depression is really scary.
I would caution folks from leaping to a conclusion about a connection between a concussion and suicide.

I am not sure anyone is asserting that the concussion caused the suicide, but it is part of the narrative that preceded her suicide, and it clearly could have played a role in what transpired.

Sad too hear. FYI: for those questioning post concussion depression.... it’s very real. Ask any retired football player. With my two dozen lifetime concussions I’ve already dealt with a lot of depression and personality changes. Im told my depression will only get more severe as I age. Brain damage is a b.
