What do you think? I used to think it was strength but then realized you're generally tested on how long you can hold the plank. So maybe it's more endurance than strength?

How could it be anything but endurance, bro? I guess if yo mama was sitting on you it would be strength.
This is why you are considered a moran, mark.

Because people say they use a plank to build core STRENGTH.

And you listen to random dumb people?
it depends on what you mean but both. Running also takes both, but more strength in the legs and more endurance in the core. Planking also takes core strength but more than running, if you plank for a long time it starts to take endurance. If you kick hard at the end of a race that takes core strength so there is some overlapping. but in my opinion you get a better core workout by doing dymnami. movements, such as changing from side plank left to standard plank to side plank right, resting on one elbow and palm for side plank. or doing t pushups when you stretch one shoulder and arm up into the air at a time, after each pushups, or transitioning from the pushup position to the plank position over and over again. its proven that adding stability to a strength exercise increases its effectively, that is situps on an exercise ball are better, squats with a tube filled with water, at least for muscle activation but thats exactly what a runner should want, more muscles activated not isolation as a bodybuilder.

True, but many isometrics have the option of unlimited force application. You can't really plank harder.
It's tricky to answer the question like - does SPECIFIC "X" exercise test OVERALL strength/endurance. The safest and the best is to say (no sarcasm here) the planks test how good you are at doing them.

Weighted vest? Have someone put a plate on your back? That's apparently how the dude with the 8 hour WR trains...
Planks are mostly used as a way to waste a bit of time in a very unpleasant way, thus making that bit of wasted time seem like an eternity. On my deathbed, I plan on doing planks to make that long good night seem like it'll never come.
