I think because of the surprising surge effort displayed by the rookie, an 'unknown' was placed in the mind of 'the machine' with about 4 km to go. Consequently, Eliud decided to abandon the WR attempt (where he would potentially risk a minor breakdown at the end, because of the great effort already expended on the slick streets), and decided to try and make sure he won the race.
When Adola attacked, Kipchoge immediately went wide, to the other side of the road, like he wanted to forget about Adola and concentrate on his own pace. Worked his way back. Did it twice. Hell of a race.
