As far as the baseball player goes, who would have ever thought that you could name your son MacKenzie and he wouldn't turn out to be a wimpy beta male. Defies all logic.

HOTT
She's young, photogenic and does well. If she medals in Tokyo in 2020, sponsors will be falling over her for endorsements.

Correct. That would be Jim Ryun.
Is that you John McEnroe?
Anyone else think it was a bad decision for her not to go pro this year?

Mclaughlin has the top seven all-time prep times in the 400H. Ryun is only #2 in the mile. Not to mention all of the additional prep and world Jr records she possesses.
They're all basically the same event though.
No wonder track is not popular with the public.

She's passing up a big contract and taking the chance that the contract won't be there later because of injury, which is certainly a risk. Or she could be an even bigger deal in a year or two and start out with a better contract than she can get now.
Mainly, it's a matter of priorities. If the college team experience is more important to her than cashing in now, that's not a crazy decision. Not everything is about maximizing your economic value.
It worked out well for Allyson Felix and Ajee Wilson to go pro young. I assume they don't have regrets about not being on a college team. You can look at Mary Cain's decision either way. If she was going to decline in ability anyway, then she was smart to cash in at her peak ability. Or maybe going pro and training too hard too soon drastically shortened a career than might have been longer and better with a more gradual build up. Or maybe a college team experience would have been a better social or psychological environment that would have let her run longer.

That's probably the case already. I predict that before 2020 and the buildup for Tokyo, some sponsor will make her an offer she can't refuse.

2) It is legal. A few years ago it wasnt, but ncaa lost the court case. There are a few models in the ncaa now. I forget the name of the distance girl everybody got into a tizzy about last ncaa xc season, but she would be an example if somebody wants to post.
I ran for ncaa before the new rule and the school made us take down the pictures of ourselves in our band website. I quit track the next season, I wanted to be a rockstar. I have a boring day Jon now. Guess I was a rebel without a cause.

She needs to move away from the 400 hurdles. Her marketability will increase even more.
Evan Jager is basically at the same level in his event as Centro is in the 1500 or as Lagat was in the 5000 for about 4 years, and on top of that he is a good looking fella, but he's no where near their level of notierity because he runs a weird event.
100h, 400, even the 800 (I bet she could run 1:57 or better) would be a better choice of McLaughlin.

Having said that, the Diamond League people seem to think the event ( the steeplechase) is a winner.
Can't wait to see the back cover. 😜
