No - her parents had to have known his reputation or been informed of it if they asked around the pro community at all and they still chose to have him coach her. It's too bad really as all of her accomplishments are under a black cloud even though I don't think he would've started messing around with her like that in high school already but who knows.
This is more than a little bit presumptuous, no?

Her parents wouldn't have known about him or even who to ask to learn more about him.
I'm sure the medical side of it proved more invasive than they expected. Probably soured her on the entire sport. She did the right thing to leave.
Her times were already fast before going to Salazar. I hope she keeps enough interest in the sport to take it seriously in the future.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the quack medicine part of Salazar's coaching would turn off a physician. If Salazar offered Cain Celebrex without a prescription, I'm sure that would turn off a physician. If I were her father, I wouldn't let a coach practice medicine without a license on my daughter.
However, there were probably lots of other things going on involving being a freshman across the country from your home, not having the same success with running and losing that positive feedback, etc., where the situation wasn't fun for her and wasn't working out well in general.
They could have asked anyone remotely affiliated with pro running and got an answer to it. With her success they had more than enough connections in the sport. Salazar has had his reputation long before Kara/Magness went public.
